It wants to be cinema, and I\u2019m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen,\u201d Spaihts said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The news of Netflix tapping Jon Spaihts to write the script was first reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/news\/gears-of-war-writer-jon-spaihts-netflix-1235559889\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGears of War\u201d is a popular video game franchise with over 40 million copies sold. The first game was released exclusively on Xbox 360 in 2006. \u201cGears of War\u201d takes place on planet Sera, where the Locust Horde, underground reptilian humanoid creatures, are threatening humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Netflix\u2019s live-action movie will explore the story of Delta Squad, a team of infantry members led by sergeant Marcus Fenix, who must defeat the Locusts to prevent human extinction.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely a relief to many gamers that a \u201cGears of War\u201d movie is finally happening. There have been multiple attempts to adapt the film. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2007\/03\/21\/gears-of-war-movie-confirmed-new-line-at-the-helm\/\">New Line Cinema<\/a> temporarily had the rights in 2007, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/f-scott-frazier-gears-of-war-universal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universal<\/a> brought on \u201cCollide\u201d writer F. Scott Frazier to adapt the game in 2018, but neither company made it happen.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2022, Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/gears-of-war-movie-tv-series-adaptation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnered<\/a> with The Coalition, the developer behind the game. In addition to the film, Netflix will also make an adult animated series.
