this.src.indexOf('missing-image.svg') !== -1){return true;};this.parentNode.replaceChild(window.missingImage(),this)\"   data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/pVdAnCjFfKjHttzdmx6uUc.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/pVdAnCjFfKjHttzdmx6uUc.jpg\"><\/picture>\n<\/div>\n<p><meta itemprop=\"url\" content=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/pVdAnCjFfKjHttzdmx6uUc.jpg\"><br \/>\n<meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"600\"><br \/>\n<meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"338\"><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\">\n<span itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Pixabay)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The scam designed to intercept customer support calls and steal banking data using fake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/the-best-android-apps-of-2022\">Android apps<\/a> has returned, and it\u2019s more effective than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Initially discovered almost a year ago, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/best-malware-removal\">malware<\/a> known as FakeCalls has returned and researchers from cybersecurity firm <a href=\"https:\/\/research.checkpoint.com\/2023\/south-korean-android-banking-menace-fakecalls\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/research.checkpoint.com\/2023\/south-korean-android-banking-menace-fakecalls\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Check Point<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> have indicated that it has employed further evasion techniques.<\/p>\n<p>According to its report, the Trojan can \u201cmasquerade as one of more than 20 financial applications\u201d to imitate phone calls in a scam known as voice phishing.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"voice-phishing-malware\">Voice phishing malware<\/h2>\n<p>The malware appears to be targeting South Korea specifically, a country that according to a government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.data.go.kr\/data\/15063815\/fileData.do\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.data.go.kr\/data\/15063815\/fileData.do\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>report<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> lost around $600 million in 2020 due to voice phishing attacks alone.<\/p>\n<p>Not only had the cybersecurity researchers discovered over 2,500 samples of the malware, but the \u201cunique\u201d evasion techniques it used had \u201cnot previously [been] seen in the wild,\u201d suggesting that a more advanced strain of malware has emerged and could remain undercover for longer periods of time.<\/p>\n<p>The attack is reasonably simple: once FakeCalls is illegitimately installed on a victim\u2019s Android device, the malware operators\u2019 phone number is masked by a genuine bank number to gain trust before victims are asked to confirm payment details and subsequently expose themselves to all manner of risks including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/best-identity-theft-protection\"><u>identity theft<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another report by <a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/mobile-threat-report-2022\/108844\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/mobile-threat-report-2022\/108844\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Kaspersky<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> uncovered the types of attacks that were most notable of 2022.
