The cell has an open-circuit voltage of 0.522 V, a short-circuit current of 33.0 mA cm\u22122, and a fill factor of 68.55%.<\/p>\n<p><time datetime=\"2023-03-17T13:05:17+01:00\" itemprop=\"datePublished\" title=\"Friday, March 17, 2023, 1:05 pm\">March 17, 2023<\/time> <span itemprop=\"author\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/Person\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/author\/emilianobellini\/\" title=\"Posts by Emiliano Bellini\" rel=\"author\">Emiliano Bellini<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Scientists from the <span>Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications<\/span> in China have fabricated a <span>thin-film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2021\/06\/07\/cadmium-free-kesterite-solar-cell-with-9-82-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kesterite (<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">CZTSSe<\/span>) solar cell<\/a> that<\/span> uses a transparent electrode.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2020\/04\/08\/new-process-for-kesterite-solar-cells-with-10-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kesterite<\/a> is one of the most promising light absorber material candidates for potential use in lower-cost thin-film solar cells. Kesterites include common elements such as copper, tin, zinc, and selenium. Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2023\/01\/18\/only5mins-thin-film-solar-researcher-discusses-future-of-cigs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CIGS<\/a> compounds, there are no supply bottlenecks expected in the future.<\/p>\n<p>However, kesterite is still less efficient than CIGS in mass production. The world record for such cells is 12.6%, achieved by Japanese thin-film producer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2013\/12\/11\/solar-frontier-breaks-czts-cell-efficiency-record_100013707\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Solar Frontier<\/a> in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur cell could be used in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and agrivoltaics, as well as in solar windows and facades,\u201d researcher Hao Xin told <strong>pv magazine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers built the cell by using a transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate coated with <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">molybdenum (Mo)<\/span> instead of commonly used substrates based on <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">opaque<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> Mo-coated soda lime glass. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">They also added a m<\/span>olybdenum trioxide (<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">MoO<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">3) layer between FTO and the precursor film to prevent the overgrowth of grains at absorber surface. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In addition, the researchers relied on sodium (Na) doping and silver (Ag) alloying to facilitate grain growth. <\/span>They dissolved the<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> absorber&#8217;s compound in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"mid-article-bibblio\" data-action=\"Internal\" data-title=\"Popular content\" data-catalogue=\"Articles\" data-location=\"Mid Single Article\">\n<h3>Popular content<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cThe solution was spin- coated on FTO substrate to form precursor film, which was further annealed with selenium in a furnace tube to form CZTSSe absorber,\u201d the scientists explained. \u201cThen cadmium sulfide (CdS) buffer layer was deposited on CZTSSe by chemical bath deposition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The academics also <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">deposited a window layer <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of intrinsic zinc oxide (i-ZnO) and indium tin oxide (ITO) by sput<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tering. They finalized the manufacturing process via the thermal evaporation of nickel (Ni) and aluminum (Al) <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">top electrodes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under standard illumination condition, a cell with an active area of <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">0.103 cm<\/span>2 and an antireflective coating based on <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">magnesium fluoride (MgF2) achieved a power conversion efficiency of 11.43%, an open-circuit voltage of 0.522 V. It had a short-circuit current of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">33.0<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mA cm<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2212<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2 <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and a fill factor <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of 68.55%. China&#8217;s <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">National<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">PV<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Industry <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Measurement and Testing Center at Fujian Metrology Insti<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tute (FJL) certified the results.<br \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> \u201cThe high <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">efficiency and facile solution process of kesterite solar cells on<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> transparent electrodes reported here open the door for this <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">green and low-cost thin film technology to many advanced<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> applications, such as semitransparent, bifacial, and tandem <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">solar cells,\u201d the scientists concluded.<br \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The researchers introduced the cell tech in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/aenm.202300253?af=R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11.4% Efficiency Kesterite Solar Cells on Transparent Electrode<\/a>,\u201d which was recently published in <em>Advanced Energy Materials<\/em>. \u201cFor the time being, we have not estimated the production cost of cells, but we are sure that the raw materials involved in cell manufacturing itself are very cheap,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>This content is protected by copyright and may not be reused.
