To receive it in your inbox every Wednesday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.technologyreview.com\/newsletters\/climate-energy-the-spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up here.<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole and developed a mild obsession with flying cars\u2014or the version of them that\u2019s hot right now in Silicon Valley, at least.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Some companies think it\u2019s time the aviation industry got a makeover, and many are betting it\u2019ll come in the form of eVTOLs<\/strong>: electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles. It\u2019s a horrible acronym for small aircraft that take off and land like a helicopter and fly like a plane. (Typically, it\u2019s pronounced <em>ee-vee-toll<\/em>, in case you were wondering.)<\/p>\n<p>If eVTOLs can get off the ground and gain regulatory approval, they could change how we think about flight. But that\u2019s a big \u201cif,\u201d and there are other questions for the industry to answer before these new flying vehicles become a reality.<strong> So let\u2019s take a look at eVTOLs: what they are, how close they are to taking off, and whether any of this is a good idea for the climate.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are eVTOLs, and why are so many companies building them?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a range of possibilities for new electric aircraft, but the eVTOL category basically includes anything that takes off and lands vertically. Most of them look like robotic bugs to me, or something a villain might fly in a James Bond movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trying to compare eVTOLs to existing aircraft is tricky. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/flying-taxis-and-evtols-arent-flying-cars-lets-call-th-1848420758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call them flying cars<\/a>, though they typically aren\u2019t really designed to move around on the ground. They\u2019re probably closest to an electric version of helicopters, though they fly using different mechanics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Whatever you call them, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/evtol.news\/aircraft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">literally hundreds of companies<\/a> working to bring eVTOLs to the skies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>A lot of the excitement centers on the fact that the vehicles could open up new uses for flight: completing last-mile delivery to rural places, transporting people or organs to hospitals, or avoiding the traffic in big metropolitan areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I will say that some of these needs could probably be filled by a robust public transit system. (We shouldn\u2019t have to fly to get easily from Newark Airport to downtown Manhattan, <a href=\"https:\/\/archer.com\/news\/archer-and-united-airlines-announce-first-commercial-electric-air-taxi-route-in-the-us-downtown-manhattan-to-newark-liberty-international-airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a service one eVTOL company plans to <\/a>offer.) But given the current state of our infrastructure, especially in the US, eVTOL companies see an opening to get people around faster.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What\u2019s the status of these things?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are some really well-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/evtol-air-taxi-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eVTOL startups<\/a> working to build the next big thing in flight. Two of the biggest, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobyaviation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joby Aviation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archer Aviation<\/a>, are based in the US. There are also some late-stage startups based in Europe, including <a href=\"https:\/\/lilium.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lilium<\/a> in Germany.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>So far, no eVTOLs have launched commercially, <strong>though several companies have announced plans to enter commercial service in 2025.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Right now, companies are testing prototypes and showing off what they can do\u2014a company called Autoflight broke the world record for the longest eVTOL flight <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/aircraft\/autoflight-longest-evtol-flight-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just last month<\/a>. The aircraft covered just over 155 miles (250 kilometers)\u2014about a mile longer than the previous record, held by Joby.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But despite impressive test flights, questions remain about how close we really are to seeing commercial eVTOLs hit the skies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Getting regulatory approval could be a sticking point. Agencies in the US and EU both plan to classify eVTOLs as a special class of aircraft, meaning they\u2019ll be subject to a different set of requirements from conventional aircraft. There\u2019s still some uncertainty about how that whole process will go down, especially in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Still, some companies are charging ahead. Archer began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20230307005532\/en\/Archer-Closes-Incentive-Transaction-Begins-Construction-on-First-of-its-Kind-High-Volume-eVTOL-Manufacturing-Facility-in-Covington-GA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">construction on a manufacturing facility<\/a> in Georgia earlier this year, which could begin production as soon as 2024 and make up to 650 aircraft per year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What would eVTOLs mean for climate?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Swapping out fossil-fuel-powered aircraft for electric ones could be a climate win.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to more conventional aircraft, an electric plane charged using an average grid could <a href=\"https:\/\/theicct.org\/publication\/global-aviation-performance-analysis-regional-electric-aircraft-jul22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut emissions by about 50%<\/a> compared with a fossil-fuel-powered plane. If electric planes are instead charged using all renewables, emissions cuts jump to a maximum of 88%. Most of those remaining emissions come from battery production\u2014because they\u2019ll probably be flying and charging a lot, batteries might need replacing every year or so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But when it comes to eVTOLs\u2019 impact on climate, it\u2019s important to consider that the vehicles might not be replacing fossil-fuel-powered airplanes. The idea is to expand flight, so eVTOLs might need to be compared with ground-based vehicles like trains or cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>There\u2019s not a ton of analysis out there yet, but one study found that an eVTOL traveling 60 miles (100 kilometers) would produce about <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2019\/04\/17\/can-flying-cars-save-the-environment-these-scientists-seem-to-think-so\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30% less in emissions than a gas-powered car<\/a>. <strong>But the eVTOL would be about 30% worse than an electric vehicle.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Related reading<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>For more on eVTOLs, including a look at one company that\u2019s decided to start out with a more conventional plane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/03\/14\/1069724\/futuristic-electric-planes-evtols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">check out this story.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I also wrote about the barriers to electric flight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/08\/17\/1058013\/electric-planes-taking-off-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a story last year.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrogen-powered planes were voted our 11th Breakthrough Technology this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/03\/01\/1069264\/the-11th-breakthrough-technology-of-2023-takes-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more about them here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Another thing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Daylight saving time is trash, and I\u2019m not afraid to say it. (Okay, the time change might be impacting my mood a little bit.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Setting the clocks back an hour in the fall and forward an hour in the spring started as an energy-saving measure. But in addition to being <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/springing-forward-into-daylight-saving-time-is-a-step-back-for-health-a-neurologist-explains-the-medical-evidence-and-why-this-shift-is-worse-than-the-fall-time-change-197343\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bad for our health<\/a>, it doesn\u2019t even really work very well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Artificially changing the time <a href=\"https:\/\/energyathaas.wordpress.com\/2023\/03\/06\/does-anybody-really-care-what-time-it-is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doesn\u2019t seem to affect behavior all that much<\/a>. And most analyses tracking electricity have found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/14\/climate\/daylight-saving-time-electricity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a minimal effect<\/a> on electricity use. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaee.org\/energyjournal\/article\/3051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 analysis<\/a> found about a 0.34% reduction, and a 2008 Department of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/analysis\/impact-extended-daylight-saving-time-national-energy-consumption-report-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report to Congress<\/a> put the effect at about 0.5%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We all need to just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2023\/03\/09\/daylight-saving-time-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agree on an alternative<\/a> and stop this madness. All right, I\u2019ll get off my soapbox now.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Keeping up with climate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>New policies could drive a boom in US mining and mineral processing.<\/strong> My colleague James Temple sat down with David Turk, deputy secretary of the Department of Energy, to talk about what the future of critical minerals looks like for the US. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2023\/03\/13\/1069658\/us-minerals-industries-are-booming-heres-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIT Technology Review<\/a>)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Biden administration approved a major new oil drilling project in Alaska<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alaska-oil-biden-willow-drilling-climate-24f135580259b9f9b245383dba921fe7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Silicon Valley Bank melted down on Friday, raising concerns for many tech startups.<\/strong> Sunday night, the government said insurance would cover all deposits, so everyone\u2019s getting their money back. Crisis averted \u2026 for now. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/03\/13\/svb-bailout-aftermath-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axios<\/a>)\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The US Department of Energy announced a $6 billion program to cut emissions from heavy industry<\/strong>. The funding could offer key help for an industry that accounts for about a quarter of the US\u2019s emissions. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canarymedia.com\/articles\/clean-industry\/doe-launches-6b-program-to-slash-emissions-from-heavy-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canary Media<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2192 Last year, I wrote about a startup trying to reinvent steel production with electricity. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/06\/28\/1055027\/green-steel-electricity-boston-metal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIT Technology Review<\/a>)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mmmmm \u2026 microbe milk<\/strong>. Some companies hope products made by engineered yeasts or fungi can compete with cow and plant milks. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/03\/12\/precision-cultivated-dairy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Great Salt Lake in Utah is in trouble<\/strong>, with climate change and increased water demand threatening to turn it into a \u201ctoxic dust bomb.\u201d But a lake in California could provide a blueprint to avoiding catastrophe. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grid.news\/story\/climate\/2023\/03\/13\/utahs-great-salt-lake-may-turn-into-a-toxic-dust-bomb-can-a-dried-up-california-lake-help-stop-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grid News<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>I loved these photos of floatovoltaics, or solar panels that float on bodies of water.<\/strong> That\u2019s one way to solve possible concerns about land use. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2023-03-07\/the-power-of-floating-solar-panels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apple added a new setting on iPhones to align charging with availability of renewable energy.<\/strong> The feature is a small but interesting case of demand response, which could be useful for bigger energy consumers like electric vehicles.
