Here\u2019s the\u00a0<em>Vogue<\/em> verdict on who will ultimately win, who should win, and who should\u2019ve been a contender in all of the top eight categories.<\/p>\n<h2>Best Picture<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>RRR<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The multiverse-spanning, nerve-jangling, heartwarming action epic is now a shoo-in for best picture, having scooped the top prizes at the Critics Choice Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, SAGs, and the Producers Guild of America Awards. Hot on its heels is the BAFTA best-film winner\u00a0<em>All Quiet on the Western Front,<\/em> as well as\u00a0<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>T\u00e1r<\/em>, though it seems unlikely that any of them will manage to catch up at this point. Nor should they\u2014the Daniels\u2019s blockbuster would be an incredibly worthy winner that the Academy could feel good about. We\u2019d love to have seen\u00a0<em>RRR<\/em> in the mix too, though\u2014the Telugu sensation which, controversially, wasn\u2019t chosen as India\u2019s entry for best international feature but is widely expected to pick up the Oscar for best original song for \u201cNaatu Naatu.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Best Director<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Todd Field for\u00a0<em>T\u00e1r<\/em>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0Charlotte Wells for\u00a0<em>Aftersun<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After their victory at the Directors Guild of America Awards, the Daniels look unstoppable\u2014and have more than earned their Oscars with their thrillingly innovative work. If anyone can cause an upset, it\u2019s industry veteran and Academy favorite Steven Spielberg, for his semi-autobiographical family drama\u00a0<em>The Fabelmans<\/em> (he\u2019s taken home this statuette twice before, albeit more than two decades ago). However, it would be more exciting to see Todd Field spoil for the meticulously directed\u00a0<em>T\u00e1r<\/em>. There\u2019s a small chance that the film, with its six nominations, could leave the ceremony empty-handed\u2014that\u2019d be a gross injustice and this is perhaps the prize it most deserves. Equally deserving is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/aftersun-review-charlotte-wells-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlotte Wells<\/a>, who received the DGA Award for best first film with her stunningly realized debut,\u00a0<em>Aftersun<\/em>, and ought to have landed a spot on this all-male shortlist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Best Actor<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Austin Butler for\u00a0<em>Elvis<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Colin Farrell for\u00a0<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0Jeremy Pope for\u00a0<em>The Inspection<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Elvis<\/em>\u2019s Austin Butler and\u00a0<em>The Whale<\/em>\u2019s Brendan Fraser are still neck and neck\u2014with the former having snagged the Golden Globe and BAFTA, and the latter the SAG and Critics Choice Award\u2014but we think Butler has what it takes to go all the way. Eight-time nominee\u00a0<em>Elvis<\/em> was more widely embraced by the Academy than the more divisive\u00a0<em>The Whale<\/em>, and Butler seems the more likely winner considering the number of showy portrayals of real-life figures that have been rewarded in recent years (Will Smith\u2019s Richard Williams in\u00a0<em>King Richard<\/em>, Rami Malek\u2019s Freddie Mercury in\u00a0<em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>, Gary Oldman\u2019s Winston Churchill in\u00a0<em>Darkest Hour<\/em>). It would be satisfying to see Colin Farrell come from behind and take it, though, for his quieter, endearing turn as the simple-minded P\u00e1draic in\u00a0<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>\u2014and would\u2019ve been even more so to see Jeremy Pope\u2019s sensitive, layered performance in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/jeremy-pope-the-inspection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Inspection<\/em><\/a>\u00a0recognized by the voting body.<\/p>\n<h2>Best Actress<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Michelle Yeoh for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Michelle Yeoh for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0Danielle Deadwyler for\u00a0<em>Till<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>With just days to go, the most closely watched race hangs on a knife edge: after her rousing speech following her Golden Globe and SAG wins, Michelle Yeoh appears to be on the cusp of a historic victory, but there\u2019s no counting out BAFTA and Critics Choice Award recipient Cate Blanchett for her towering performance in\u00a0<em>T\u00e1r.<\/em>\u00a0Their fellow nominees\u2014<em>Blonde<\/em>\u2019s Ana de Armas,\u00a0<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>\u2019s Michelle Williams, and\u00a0<em>To Leslie<\/em>\u2019s Andrea Riseborough\u2014delivered compelling turns, but if anyone could have truly given Yeoh and Blanchett a run for their money, it\u2019s\u00a0<em>Till<\/em>\u2019s formidable Danielle Deadwyler. Her snub remains one of this year\u2019s most heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<h2>Best Supporting Actor<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Ke Huy Quan for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Ke Huy Quan for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0Paul Dano for\u00a0<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The only presumed lock in the acting races is Ke Huy Quan for his chameleonic work in\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>, not to mention a deeply moving campaign which focused on his triumphant return to the industry after becoming disillusioned as a child actor. In the wake of his tearful, goosebump-inducing SAG acceptance speech, it\u2019s difficult to imagine anyone else taking home this prize (he\u2019s also won the Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award, and Critics Choice Award). Among the other four hopefuls is acting legend Judd Hirsch, for his explosive, under-10-minute cameo in\u00a0<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>, but we would\u2019ve preferred to see Paul Dano make the cut instead, for his far more measured take on the tragic Burt Fabelman, a fictionalized version of Spielberg\u2019s own father, Arnold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Best Supporting Actress<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Jamie Lee Curtis for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Angela Bassett for\u00a0<em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0Jessie Buckley for\u00a0<em>Women Talking<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this highly competitive category, three actors have been surging of late: SAG winner Jamie Lee Curtis; Critics Choice Award and Golden Globe recipient Angela Bassett; and the BAFTA\u2019s choice, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/kerry-condon-banshees-of-inisherin-oscars-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerry Condon<\/a>. Any of them could feasibly secure the statuette, but Curtis\u2019s stature in the industry, the support behind\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>\u00a0across the board, and the rapturous reception to her delightful acceptance speech at the SAGs means that she likely has the most momentum. Bassett is just as, if not more, deserving, though, for her embodiment of the grieving Queen Ramonda.\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>\u2019s Stephanie Hsu and\u00a0<em>The Whale<\/em>\u2019s Hong Chau have both earned their places on the line-up, too, with scene-stealing turns, but could a sixth spot be added, we would love to have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/claire-foy-jessie-buckley-women-talking-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jessie Buckley<\/a> included for her initially thorny and then painfully poignant performance in\u00a0<em>Women Talking<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Best Original Screenplay<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for\u00a0<em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Martin McDonagh for\u00a0<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0Charlotte Wells for\u00a0<em>Aftersun<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-journey-hook=\"client-content\" data-testid=\"BodyWrapper\">\n<p>Seven-time Oscar nominee Martin McDonagh has won only once (for his live action short\u00a0<em>Six Shooter<\/em>), and never for a feature-length project. His script for the whimsical tragicomedy\u00a0<em>The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>\u00a0is one of his finest to date, and has so far brought him a BAFTA and Golden Globe. However, he faces stiff competition from the Daniels, whose haul includes the Critics Choice Award, Independent Spirit Award, and the Writers Guild of America Award for best screenplay. They should prevail, given the Academy\u2019s recent tendency to reward inventive films with big, zeitgeist-defining ideas (<em>Promising Young Woman<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Parasite<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Get Out<\/em>). The three other worthy contenders are\u00a0<em>The Fabelmans<\/em>,\u00a0<em>T\u00e1r<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Triangle of Sadness<\/em>, but Charlotte Wells\u2019s\u00a0<em>Aftersun<\/em>\u00a0is conspicuous in its absence\u2014a starkly lyrical screenplay that was easily among the year\u2019s best.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Best Adapted Screenplay<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Who will win:<\/strong>\u00a0Sarah Polley for\u00a0<em>Women Talking<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should win:<\/strong>\u00a0Sarah Polley for\u00a0<em>Women Talking<\/em><br \/><strong>Who should\u2019ve been a contender:<\/strong>\u00a0David Kajganich for\u00a0<em>Bones and All<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edward Berger, Ian Stokell, and Lesley Paterson could very well scoop this prize for\u00a0<em>All Quiet on the Western Front,<\/em>\u00a0as they did at the BAFTAs, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/women-talking-sarah-polley-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Polley<\/a>\u2019s best adapted screenplay wins at the Critics Choice Awards and Writers Guild of America Awards for her harrowing, expertly calibrated\u00a0<em>Women Talking<\/em> suggests that she has the advantage\u2014and rightly so.
