The increase was half the 2.1% increase the country saw  in January and far below the 1.7% increase that <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/chinas-inflation-rate-slows-to-one-year-low-casting-doubt-on-recovery-f178f1c8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">economists polled<\/a><\/span> by the Wall Street Journal had predicted. <\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s exports, meanwhile, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/amp\/articles\/chinese-exports-pull-back-again-hampering-post-covid-recovery-185c3f21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fell<\/a><\/span> in the first two months of the year. And last year, its <span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/china-zero-covid-2022-gdp-growth-slowdown-1849994377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">population declined<\/a><\/span> for the first time in more than half a century, calling into question  the country\u2019s <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-sets-economic-growth-target-of-around-5-for-the-year-88eaff89?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ability to<\/a><\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-sets-economic-growth-target-of-around-5-for-the-year-88eaff89?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> meet<\/a><\/span>  the 5% GDP target that Chinese officials set for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The prices that factories pay for raw materials <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/economic-indicators\/article\/3212876\/china-inflation-consumer-prices-eased-february-producer-prices-remained-deflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">didn\u2019t move at all<\/a><\/span> from January to February. This was a change from Chinese producer prices falling in both December and January, and means that a pick up in inflation in China could be coming in the next couple of months.<\/p>\n<div data-inset-url=\"https:\/\/howl.me\/cjgLe6a52f9\" data-inset-category=\"CommerceInsetMobile\">\n<p>G\/O Media may get a commission<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>After China\u2019s overall consumer price index moved up by only 2% for 2022, Chinese officials set another cap of 3% inflation for 2023. This is a full percentage point higher than most central bank targets.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the slow inflation and exports data, economists with Capital Economics expect China to finish out the year with 5.5% GDP, but without any support from more government stimulus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leadership clearly want to put the troubles of the past couple of years behind them, get the economy back on track, and restore confidence both at home and abroad,\u201d the economists wrote in a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitaleconomics.com\/publications\/china-economics-focus\/chinas-economic-roadmap-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research note<\/a><\/span>. \u201cBut they also appear to feel that the sugar rush from another round of large-scale stimulus would not be worth the medium-term costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/china-is-struggling-with-too-little-inflation-1850208783\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Nate DiCamillo<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prices moving too slowly.Photo: Xiaoyu Yin (Reuters)While most of the world is experiencing price increases it hasn\u2019t seen since the 1980s, China is having the opposite problem.
