Multiple Republican senators lashed out at Carlson\u2019s characterization that the footage McCarthy handed over \u201cdemolishes . . . the claim that January 6th was an insurrection,\u201d while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) launched a scathing rebuke of the segment on the Senate floor Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said that equating the insurrection to a protest is \u201cjust a lie\u201d and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) called Carlson\u2019s framing \u201cbulls\u2014t,\u201d CNN reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Mike Rounds (S.D.), and John Thune (S.D.) also rejected Carlson\u2019s narrative, with Thune telling CNN: \u201cTthere were a lot of people in the Capitol at that time that were scared for their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Schumer opened Tuesday\u2019s Senate session by calling the segment \u201cone of the most shameful hours we have ever seen on cable television,\u201d and criticized McCarthy for engaging in a \u201ctreacherous, treacherous game by catering to the hard right\u201d\u2014a reference to McCarthy\u2019s deal with his right-wing detractors during January speaker election to release the tapes in exchange for their support.<\/p>\n

Schumer also called on Fox News chairman Rupert Murdoch to block the release of future segments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Carlson on Monday aired footage showing convicted rioter Jacob Chansley, known as the \u201cQAnon Shaman,\u201d along with images of Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick, who died a day after he responded to the attack\u2014among 41,000 hours of tapes McCarthy released to Carlson last month. \u201cThe footage does not show an insurrection or a riot in progress,\u201d Carlson said during the segment. \u201cInstead it shows police escorting people through the building, including the now-infamous \u2018QAnon Shaman.\u2019\u201d Schumer, before Monday\u2019s segment aired, blasted McCarthy\u2019s release of the tapes as a decision that \u201cposes grave security risks to members of Congress and everyone who works on Capitol Hill,\u201d he wrote in a letter<\/a> to Senate Democrats last week. Sicknick\u2019s death was one of several tied to the January 6 Capitol riot, while approximately 114 police officers are estimated to have been injured, according to the Government Accountability Office.<\/p>\n

While Carlson defended the rioters in Monday\u2019s segment by saying they were \u201cright\u201d to believe \u201cthat the election they had just voted in had been unfairly conducted,\u201d he has privately disputed claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from former President Donald Trump, according to allegations made by Dominion Voting Systems in its defamation case against Fox. Court papers filed by the company last month claim that Carlson called conspiracy theories involving Dominion machines \u201cinsane\u201d and \u201cabsurd,\u201d despite promoting them on Fox News.<\/p>\n

McCarthy said last month the tapes would eventually be made public, though it\u2019s unclear when. McCarthy made the pledge amid demands from other news organizations that they also should have access to the security footage.<\/p>\n
