{"id":615853,"date":"2023-03-09T07:49:38","date_gmt":"2023-03-09T13:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/09\/indonesian-match-official-jailed-over-deadly-soccer-stampede\/"},"modified":"2023-03-09T07:49:38","modified_gmt":"2023-03-09T13:49:38","slug":"indonesian-match-official-jailed-over-deadly-soccer-stampede","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/09\/indonesian-match-official-jailed-over-deadly-soccer-stampede\/","title":{"rendered":"Indonesian match official jailed over deadly soccer stampede"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>SURABAYA, Indonesia (Reuters) \u2013     An Indonesian court handed prison sentences to two soccer match officials on Thursday after finding them guilty of negligence over one of the world\u2019s deadliest stadium stampedes. <\/p>\n<p>The October 2022 derby match in Malang, East Java, between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended in chaos with 135 spectators killed, many crushed as they fled for exits after police fired tear gas into the crowd.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>One match official, Abdul Haris, was found guilty \u201cdue to his negligence causing people to die and get severely injured\u201d, judge Abu Achmad Shiddqi Hamsya\u00a0said at the court in Surabaya. He was sentenced to a year and a half in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The judges also found security officer Suko Sutrisno guilty of negligence and jailed him for one year.<\/p>\n<p>Both men worked for Arema FC, and have been banned from soccer-related activities for life by the country\u2019s football federation.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by Indonesia\u2019s human rights commission found the main cause of the stampede was police firing into the crowd 45 rounds of tear gas, which soccer\u2019s world governing body FIFA has banned as a crowd control measure.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators also said the stadium was filled beyond capacity. <\/p>\n<p>Both match officials\u2019 representatives said they would study the ruling before attempting next legal steps.<\/p>\n<p>One victim\u2019s father, 52-year-old Miftahuddin, said the verdicts were \u201clacking\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow was that sentence so light?\u201d he said, adding a tougher sentence would have given relief \u201cto (his) daughter\u2026who is in another realm\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Three police officers are also charged with the same offences and their cases will be decided at a later date.<\/p>\n<p> (Reporting by Prasto Wardoyo in Surabaya and Ananda Teresia, Stanley Widianto in Jakarta; Editing by Martin Petty, Kanupriya Kapoor)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxempire.com\/news\/article\/indonesian-match-official-jailed-over-deadly-soccer-stampede-1305516\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Reuters<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SURABAYA, Indonesia (Reuters) \u2013 An Indonesian court handed prison sentences to two soccer match officials on Thursday after finding them guilty of negligence over one of the world\u2019s deadliest stadium stampedes.
