The Federal Trade Commission is stepping up its investigation into some of Twitter\u2019s most controversial decisions since Elon Musk took over the company last fall. That includes the company\u2019s mass layoffs and the launch of Twitter Blue, as well as the company\u2019s dealings with journalists involved with the so-called \u201cTwitter Files,\u201d according to a new report<\/a> in The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

At issue, is Twitter\u2019s 2022 settlement<\/a> with the FTC over its use of \u201cdeceptive\u201d ad targeting. Along with a $150 million fine, the company at the time agreed to a \u201ccomprehensive privacy and information security program,\u201d as well as other strict measures meant to protect users\u2019 privacy. But there\u2019s been widespread concern from lawmakers and others that Twitter has not adhered to those requirements under Musk\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Now, The Wall Street Journal <\/em> reports that the FTC has sent at least a dozen letters to Twitter since last fall in an effort to get more information about the company\u2019s handling of layoffs, Twitter Blue, the \u201cTwitter Files\u201d and other issues. The agency is also reportedly trying to depose Musk as part of the inquiry. The House Judiciary Committee also released a report<\/a> about the FTC’s inquiries to Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report isn\u2019t the first suggestion that Twitter may have run afoul of the regulator since Musk\u2019s takeover. The FTC previously said it had \u201cdeep concern\u201d<\/a> following the departures of key privacy and security executives. Lawmakers and others have also raised concerns about the hasty rollout of Twitter Blue, which reportedly<\/a> launched without a proper privacy or security review, a requirement of Twitter\u2019s FTC settlement.<\/p>\n

Likewise, as Bloomberg <\/em>pointed out last year,<\/a> the settlement also requires Twitter to limit internal access to Twitter users\u2019 data. Security experts have questioned whether Musk\u2019s decision to hand over reams of internal documents and grant journalists access to internal systems <\/a>could violate its obligations with the FTC.<\/p>\n

In a tweet,<\/a> Musk called the FTC\u2019s actions \u201ca shameful case of weaponization of a government agency for political purposes and suppression of the truth.\u201d Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee also criticized<\/a> the agency\u2019s investigation as \u201charassment.\u201d<\/p>\n
