Upon accepting the night’s biggest award, Daniel Scheinert admitted, “Writing is confusing and hard and we felt so lost so often,” thanking their collaborators for sifting through “very, very rough drafts.” Daniel Kwan used the moment to address the Writers Guild’s upcoming negotiations, saying, “I’m so proud to be a part of the WGA. What you do for the industry, you are a shining beacon,” and added, “This award is for all of you guys, thank you so much for being so inspiring. Let’s go give them hell.”

Mike White also made a rare appearance at the L.A. show to accept for The White Lotus, saying, “I love living a writer’s life, and an award like this can let me keep living a writer’s life.”

Abbott Elementary actress and comedian Janelle James hosted the L.A. ceremony, while comedian and actress Michelle Buteau (The Circle, Welcome to Buteaupia) hosted the New York ceremony.

In her monologue, Buteau urged Steven Spielberg, who was in the audience, to make a movie about “happy Black people”; Spike Lee, also in the audience, said he’d co-direct. In New York, Lee was recognized with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement by John Turturro, who wasn’t there to present the award in person after being called to set; Paul Simms (What We Do in the Shadows, Atlanta, The Larry Sanders Show, NewsRadio) was presented with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence by Donald Glover; and Penelope Koechl was honored with the Richard B. The guild, which is set to begin negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on March 20, last week shared with members its pattern of demands or broad priorities it hopes to tackle in such talks, with a deadline of Tuesday to submit responses. The issues being considered include standardized fees for movies premiering in theaters and on streaming services and greater regulation of writing performed by artificial intelligence. The guild is also looking to enlarge writer minimums across film, TV and new media; expand protection for writers who work for long periods of time on short-order series; “address the abuses of mini-rooms“; and “ensure appropriate television series writing compensation throughout entire process of pre production, production and post production.” The guild also wants to shore up its pension plan and health fund.

Asked about the upcoming negotiations on the red carpet before the ceremony, WGA East president Michael Winship said he feels “confident.” “I feel like we have a really amazing negotiating committee this year, and a really good group — very skilled, very talented, very experienced,” Winship said. “They are ready to go in and face our people across the table and deal with all the new things that we have to deal with — streaming and other issues — and I’m very confident that we’ll have a successful negotiation.” Of a possible strike, he said: “I can’t make any kind of prediction at this point. You hope for the best, prepare for the worst.”

James also addressed the topic in her monologue in Los Angeles. “There’s a feeling of unity in the air tonight isn’t there? Yes. I’m sure the upcoming negotiations will go smoothly but no matter what happens, we’re all going to support each other right?” she said. “And if we decide to take further action, we’ll do it together, and if we decide to use any of that downtime to come up with movies starring Janelle James, who am I to protest?”

A complete list of winners follows.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Everything Everywhere All at Once, Written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert; A24 (WINNER)

The Fabelmans, Written by Steven Spielberg & Tony Kushner; Universal Pictures

The Menu, Written by Seth Reiss & Will Tracy; Searchlight Pictures

Nope, Written by Jordan Peele; Universal Pictures

Tár, Written by Todd Field; Focus Features

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Screenplay by Ryan Coogler & Joe Robert Cole, Story by Ryan Coogler, Based on the Marvel Comics; Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Written by Rian Johnson; Netflix

She Said, Screenplay by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Based on the New York Times Investigation by Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey and Rebecca Corbett and the book She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey; Universal Pictures

Top Gun: Maverick, Screenplay by Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, Story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, Based on Characters Created by Jim Cash & Jack Epps, Jr.; Paramount Pictures

Women Talking, Screenplay by Sarah Polley, Based upon the book by Miriam Toews; Orion Pictures/UAR (WINNER)

DOCUMENTARY SCREENPLAY

2nd Chance, Written by Ramin Bahrani; Showtime Documentary Films

Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, Written by Mark Bailey & Keven McAlester; Netflix

Last Flight Home, Written by Ondi Timoner; MTV Documentary Films

Moonage Daydream, Written by Brett Morgen; Neon (WINNER)

¡Viva Maestro!, Written by Theodore Braun; Greenwich Entertainment

DRAMA SERIES

Andor (Disney+)
Written by Dan Gilroy, Tony Gilroy, Stephen Schiff, Beau Willimon

Better Call Saul (AMC)
Written by Ann Cherkis, Vince Gilligan, Peter Gould, Ariel Levine, Thomas Schnauz, Gordon Smith, Alison Tatlock

The Crown (Netflix)
Written by Peter Morgan

Severance (Apple TV+) (WINNER)
Written by Chris Black, Andrew Colville, Kari Drake, Dan Erickson, Mark Friedman, Helen Leigh, Anna Moench, Amanda Overton

Yellowjackets (Showtime)
Written by Cameron Brent Johnson, Katherine Kearns, Jonathan Lisco, Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson, Liz Phang, Ameni Rozsa, Sarah L.
