Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X363&#038;xcust=trdpro_us_9036349750892712000&#038;xs=1&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fdeveloper.apple.com%2Fapp-store%2Freview%2F&#038;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.techradar.com%2Fnews%2Fapple-wants-chatgpt-using-email-app-to-be-age-restricted\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/app-store\/review\/\" data-hl-processed=\"skimlinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=92X363&#038;xcust=hawk-custom-tracking&#038;xs=1&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fdeveloper.apple.com%2Fapp-store%2Freview%2F&#038;sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.techradar.com%2Fnews%2Fapple-wants-chatgpt-using-email-app-to-be-age-restricted\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"SkimLinks - apple.com\" data-merchant-id=\"undefined\" data-merchant-url=\"undefined\" data-merchant-network=\"undefined\">App Review<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> division told Blix that as AI could produce content that may be unsuitable for younger audiences, one of the two above provisions must be applied before release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Ben Volach, co-founder of BlueMail developer Blix Inc., disputed Apple&#8217;s ruling, arguing that BlueMail already has content filtering, and that other apps on the App Store with similar AI capabilities do not have age restrictions in place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"apos-unfairly-targeted-apos\">&#8216;Unfairly targeted&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The new AI feature in BlueMail integrates OpenAI&#8217;s ever popular ChatGPT chatbot into the email client, letting users automate the writing of emails. It makes use of previous emails and events in your calendar to make sure its content is appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApple is making it really hard for us to bring innovation to our users,\u201d said Volach. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-blocks-update-of-chatgpt-powered-app-as-concerns-grow-over-ais-potential-harm-c4ca9372?mod=djemalertNEWS\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-blocks-update-of-chatgpt-powered-app-as-concerns-grow-over-ais-potential-harm-c4ca9372?mod=djemalertNEWS\" rel=\"noopener\">WSJ<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span>, a spokesperson told them that the App Review Board is currently investigating the complaint made by Blix.<\/p>\n<p>Volach also claims that a test version of the updated version of the app was reviewed every day for a week before it was rejected by Apple. However, the Android version of the upgraded app was allowed on the Google Play Store with no age restrictions or content filtering imposed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He believes that BlueMail is being unfairly targeted by Apple, and that age restrictions would impact their ability to distribute the app to new users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apple seems more concerned about the risks of AI than other big tech companies. It has been conspicuously absent from the current arms race between Microsoft &#8211; a large backer of OpenAI who have recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/i-know-where-bing-ai-chat-went-wrong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inserted its chatbot models<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> into its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/best\/browser\">s<\/a>earch engine Bing &#8211; and Google, with its new rival chatbot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/googles-chatgpt-rival-bard-is-already-off-to-a-bad-start-company-shares-tumble\">Bard<\/a> and its supposedly incredibly powerful LamDA AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s perhaps only a matter of time before it joins in &#8211; in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2023\/02\/02\/apple-earnings-call-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2023\/02\/02\/apple-earnings-call-insights\/\" rel=\"noopener\">earnings call last month<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span>, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that AI is a &#8220;major focus of ours&#8221; &#8211; but for now, it seems to be keeping a watchful eye on the AI on iOS apps.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/bings-new-android-and-iphone-apps-let-you-speak-to-its-chatgpt-brain\">Bing&#8217;s new smartphone app with AI integration<\/a> is restricted to 17+ on the iphone, whereas there are no restrictions for the Android version on the Google Play Store.
