The workers are currently attempting to organize with the Alphabet Worker\u2019s Union, and the NLRB\u2019s decision could mean that the tech giant has to negotiate with them if they vote to unionize in an upcoming election.<\/p>\n<p>The workers are directly employed by a company called Cognizant, which acts as an Alphabet subcontractor. However, the NLRB believes that Google has enough control over their \u201cbenefits, hours of work, supervision, and direction of work\u201d that it counts as a partial employer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-03\/google-must-negotiate-if-contract-staff-unionize-nlrb-official-rules#xj4y7vzkg\">according to <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to win a precedent setting victory not just for ourselves, but also for workers across the country,\u201d said Sam Regan, a union organizer and YouTube Music contractor, who was quoted in a press release from the AWU. \u201cTechnology companies in particular have innovated new ways to deny responsibility for their workers\u2019 livelihoods through subcontracting, gig work, and other poor employment practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For its part, Alphabet intends to appeal the NLRB\u2019s decision. \u201cWe simply don\u2019t control these workers\u2019 employment terms or working conditions,\u201d spokesperson Courtenay Mencini told <em>Bloomberg<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the union drive and fight to get Alphabet recognized as a joint employer, the contractors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/2\/3\/23585093\/youtube-music-contractors-strike-google-remote-work\">went on strike in February<\/a> to protest return to office orders \u2014 the first strike at the company, according to the AWU.
