For example, if you want to learn about the chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio, <a href=\"https:\/\/brave.com\/ai-summarizer\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/brave.com\/ai-summarizer\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Summarizer will create<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> a one paragraph summary of the event alongside some sources for you to read. Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/bing-and-chatgpt-might-be-the-future-of-search-even-if-google-doesnt-believe-it\">Microsoft which only uses ChatGPT for Bing<\/a>&#8216;s chatbot, Summarizer uses three in-house large language models, LLMs for short, based on retrained versions of the BART and DeBERTa AI models to create the search-results snippets.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"retraining-ai\">Retraining AI<\/h2>\n<p>To simplify the technology behind them, <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.facebook.com\/research\/publications\/bart-denoising-sequence-to-sequence-pre-training-for-natural-language-generation-translation-and-comprehension\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ai.facebook.com\/research\/publications\/bart-denoising-sequence-to-sequence-pre-training-for-natural-language-generation-translation-and-comprehension\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>BART<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> and <a href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=kXQk6%2AivFEQ&#038;mid=24542&#038;u1=trd-us-4699439267949015000&#038;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fresearch%2Fblog%2Fmicrosoft-deberta-surpasses-human-performance-on-the-superglue-benchmark%2F\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/blog\/microsoft-deberta-surpasses-human-performance-on-the-superglue-benchmark\/\" data-hl-processed=\"hawklinks\" data-placeholder-url=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=kXQk6%2AivFEQ&#038;mid=24542&#038;u1=hawk-custom-tracking&#038;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fresearch%2Fblog%2Fmicrosoft-deberta-surpasses-human-performance-on-the-superglue-benchmark%2F\" rel=\"sponsored noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" data-merchant-name=\"microsoft.com\" data-merchant-id=\"1855\" data-merchant-url=\"microsoft.com\" data-merchant-network=\"LS\"><u>DeBERTa<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> are generative writing AIs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/chatgpt-explained\"><u>ChatGPT<\/u><\/a> that have been specially trained to take into account word positioning as well as context so the text output reads well. What Brave did is take those models and retrain them using its own search result data to develop Summarizer.<\/p>\n<p>Summarizer\u2019s training regiment is a three-step process, according to the announcement. First, Brave taught the LLMs to prioritize answering the question being asked. Then, the company utilized \u201czero-shot classifiers\u201d to categorize results so the given information is relevant. The final step helps the models rewrite the snippet so it\u2019s more coherent. The result is an accurate answer written succinctly with multiple sources attached.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware the feature is still in the early stages. Brave states Summarizer only utilizes about 17 percent of search queries to formulate an answer, but there are plans to scale that number even higher for better paragraphs. Its accuracy needs some work, too. The company admits Summarizer may produce what it calls \u201challucinations\u201d which are unrelated snippets mixed in with results. Plus there&#8217;s the possibility of the feature throwing in some \u201cfalse or offensive text\u201d into an answer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"availability\">Availability<\/h2>\n<p>Summarizer is currently available to all Brave Search users on desktop and mobile with the exception of the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.brave.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/6959189556237-How-do-I-use-Goggles-#:~:text=Goggles%20for%20Brave%20Search%20is,leanings%2C%20or%20any%20other%20factors.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/support.brave.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/6959189556237-How-do-I-use-Goggles-#:~:text=Goggles%20for%20Brave%20Search%20is,leanings%2C%20or%20any%20other%20factors.\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Brave Search Goggles<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span><u>.<\/u> It\u2019s disabled there. You can turn it off anytime you want by going into the browser\u2019s settings menu. The company is also <a href=\"https:\/\/search.brave.com\/help\/feedback\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/search.brave.com\/help\/feedback\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>asking users to give some feedback<\/u><\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> on how it can improve the tool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We tried out Summarizer ourselves, and as cool as it is, it does need some work. Not all search results will give you a snippet as it depends on what you ask, as well as which news topics are making the rounds. The East Palestine, Ohio chemical spill, for example, is currently a hot button issue so you get Summarizer working just fine there. However when we asked about the recent cold snap in Los Angeles and what\u2019s going on with certain video game developers, we either got no summary or outdated information. But the latter did come with sources so it was at least accurate.
