{"id":613956,"date":"2023-03-03T16:49:36","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T22:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/03\/most-primary-care-telehealth-visits-dont-require-in-person-follow-up-epic-study-shows\/"},"modified":"2023-03-03T16:49:36","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T22:49:36","slug":"most-primary-care-telehealth-visits-dont-require-in-person-follow-up-epic-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/03\/most-primary-care-telehealth-visits-dont-require-in-person-follow-up-epic-study-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Most primary care telehealth visits don&#8217;t require in-person follow-up, Epic study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<div property=\"content:encoded\">\n<p>To explore the efficacy of primary care telehealth, a recent Epic Research study examined the frequency of in-person physician visits that followed 18,636,522 primary care telemedicine appointments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHY IT MATTERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The dual team study published by Epic found that 60% of the time, the virtual primary care telehealth appointments held between March 1, 2020\u00a0and October 15, 2022\u00a0did not result in subsequent doctors&#8217; visits.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Epic found that kids more frequently had an office visit following telehealth: More than half (54%) saw pediatricians in person within 90 days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;General pediatrics was the most common primary care specialty to need in-person follow-up, but patients still had in-person follow-up less than half of the time,&#8221; researchers said in the new report.<\/p>\n<p>They also looked at the differences in the rate of in-person follow-up based on a patient\u2019s insurance coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that patients covered by Medicaid and Medicare had the highest in-person follow-up rates,&#8221; they said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, 55% of the time, patients did not have an in-person follow-up visit \u2013 regardless of coverage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE LARGER TREND<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Epic&#8217;s previous\u00a0<a data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/epic-research-shows-telehealth-efficacy-makes-case-more-reimbursement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/epic-research-shows-telehealth-efficacy-makes-case-more-reimbursement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study of 35 million specialty telehealth visits<\/a>\u00a0also found that most patients did not require in-person visits within 90 days of their online appointments.<\/p>\n<p>High rates of in-person follow-up were present only in specialties that require hands-on care, such as obstetrics and surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Travis Rush, CEO of Reperio, a vendor of at-home biometric screening technologies, told\u00a0<em>Healthcare IT News<\/em>\u00a0that healthcare leaders should\u00a0<a data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/why-healthcare-leaders-should-embrace-home-based-technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/why-healthcare-leaders-should-embrace-home-based-technologies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embrace home-based care technologies<\/a>\u00a0because they can elevate health and reduce the costs of chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fewer individuals than ever visit their primary care doctor on a regular basis \u2013 even if they have insurance,&#8221; Rush said last month.<\/p>\n<p>Physician shortage is also a factor in fewer in-person visits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Americans are having a harder time securing an appointment with a doctor than 10 years ago,&#8221; he pointed out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE RECORD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While primary care shows a slightly lower rate of telehealth visits without an in-person follow-up compared to the specialties previously evaluated, the 61% without a follow-up in primary care might be an underestimate,&#8221; said Epic researchers in the report.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Primary care physicians treat a wide variety of conditions, so the subsequent in-person visit might not have been related to the reason for the telehealth visit,&#8221; they added, noting that patients may have booked telehealth appointments ahead of unrelated, previously scheduled wellness visits.<\/p>\n<p><em>Andrea Fox is senior editor of Healthcare IT News.<br \/>\nEmail:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/mailto:af**@***ss.org\" data-original-string=\"M0YPlUCgi76GGp4IH4mSxw==7f4yZssWxR3w+3xt24YoA7uTA==\" title=\"This contact has been encoded by Anti-Spam by CleanTalk.
