{"id":613646,"date":"2023-03-02T23:28:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T05:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/02\/earnings-results-shopping-at-kroger-can-be-up-to-four-times-cheaper-than-eating-out-ceo-says\/"},"modified":"2023-03-02T23:28:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T05:28:00","slug":"earnings-results-shopping-at-kroger-can-be-up-to-four-times-cheaper-than-eating-out-ceo-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/03\/02\/earnings-results-shopping-at-kroger-can-be-up-to-four-times-cheaper-than-eating-out-ceo-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Earnings Results: Shopping at Kroger can be up to four times cheaper than eating out, CEO says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article__body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0001739271\" role=\"document\">\n<p>Inflation and a slowing economy are making U.S. shoppers, even so-called higher-income consumers, look for more ways to save money, and that\u2019s what helped grocery chain Kroger Co. beat fourth-fiscal-quarter profit expectations and provide a full-year outlook that was well above Wall Street forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe gap between food-at-home and food-away-from-home spending grew in the fourth quarter, as more customers gravitated toward affordable meal solutions that restaurants simply can\u2019t provide,\u201d said Kroger Chief Executive Rodney McMullen on a post-earnings-report conference call, according to a FactSet transcript. \u201cOur research shows that cooking at home is three to four times less expensive than dining out.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The company said it had been focusing on improving its pricing relative to key competitors well before inflation starting climbing, and even before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kroger said it has done so by \u201cinvestment in pricing,\u201d in each of the past 20 years, and by cutting costs by $1 billion for the past six years.<\/p>\n<p>Part of that investment in pricing comes from the personalization of coupons, which customers are using more and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs customers looked for more ways to save, digital coupon engagement hit an all-time high during the year,\u201d McMullen said. \u201cOur combined paper and digital coupons helped save our customers more than $1.4 billion on products they need and want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/retail-sales-surge-3-at-start-of-2023-in-clear-sign-the-economy-is-still-growing-53d14a41?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"follow\">Retail sales surge 3% at start of 2023 in clear sign the economy is still growing<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/eurozone-inflation-eased-less-than-expected-in-february-8bfec97d?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"follow\">Eurozone inflation eased less than expected in February<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another way customers have been saving is by buying Kroger-branded products: \u201cThey can save 7% to 10% by buying Our Brands versus national brands,\u201d McMullen said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Kroger has seen an \u201cespecially strong response\u201d from its \u201chigher-income households,\u201d which grew by 1.1 million in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Kroger\u2019s stock<br \/>\n        <a data-track-hover=\"QuotePeek\" data-charting-symbol=\"STOCK\/US\/XNYS\/KR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/KR?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KR,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206215053\/composite\">+5.42%<\/bg-quote><\/a><br \/>\n       climbed 5.4% to close at $45.73, a six-week high. The stock was one of the five biggest gainers among S&#038;P 500<br \/>\n        <a data-track-hover=\"QuotePeek\" data-charting-symbol=\"INDEX\/US\/S&#038;P US\/SPX\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/index\/SPX?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\">+0.76%<\/bg-quote><\/a><br \/>\n       components.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/kroger-stock-climbs-after-profit-and-same-store-sales-beat-expectations-and-outlook-was-upbeat-fc7b5ccf?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"follow\">reported before Thursday\u2019s opening bell<\/a> that net income for the quarter ending Jan. 28 fell to $450 million, or 62 cents a share, from $566 million, or 75 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Excluding nonrecurring items, such as goodwill and impairment charges, adjusted earnings per share rose to 99 cents from 91 cents to beat the FactSet consensus, or average analyst estimate compiled by FactSet, of 90 cents.<\/p>\n<p>Sales rose 5.4% to $34.82 billion, which missed the FactSet consensus of $35.03 billion, while same-store-sales growth of 6.2% beat the forecast 4.9% rise.<\/p>\n<p>And for fiscal 2023, Kroger said it expects adjusted EPS of $4.45 to $4.60, well above the FactSet consensus of $4.19.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the company\u2019s proposed $24.6 billion purchase of Albertsons Companies Inc.<br \/>\n        <a data-track-hover=\"QuotePeek\" data-charting-symbol=\"STOCK\/US\/XNYS\/ACI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/stock\/ACI?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACI,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209620932\/composite\" class><\/bg-quote><\/a><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       CEO McMullen said the merger remains on track to close in early 2024.
