\n\tAriana DeBose<\/a> is opening up about her show-opening musical medley at the 2023 BAFTA Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring an interview on BBC Radio 2\u2019s The Zoe Ball\u00a0Breakfast Show<\/em><\/em>, the Oscar-winning singer and actress spoke out for the first time since receiving backlash<\/a> on social media after performing an original rap in honor of the female nominees at the Feb. 19 awards show in London.<\/p>\n

\n\tHost Zoe Ball opened the conversation by praising DeBose\u2019s performance, which mixed a high-energy medley of Eurythmics<\/a>\u2018 \u201cSisters Are Doin\u2019 It for Themselves\u201d and Sister Sledge\u2019s \u201cWe Are Family\u201d with a rap number that named-checked famous actresses like Angela Bassett, Viola Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know what, you might be one of the few,\u201d the West Side Story<\/em> film reboot actress responded in a video of the interview, which was shared through TikTok<\/a> on Saturday (Feb. 25). \u201cI\u2019ll take it, because you\u2019re my people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe radio show host added, \u201cIt was a woman, singing and dancing, being magnificent, celebrating women onstage. Come on!\u201d DeBose agreed, saying, \u201cThat\u2019s what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHonestly, it\u2019s not like I\u2019m like, \u2018Hey BAFTA, let me in!\u2019 They actually called me, believe it or not,\u201d the actress-singer continued. \u201cBut that was the assignment. Like, \u2018Come celebrate women,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Absolutely!\u2019 We did that and it was fun. Not gonna lie, I had a blast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDeBose went on to say that Elvis<\/em> director Baz Luhrmann found her after the show and gave her positive feedback about the performance. She also noted that \u201cgay Twitter seemed to like it, so that\u2019s good. I\u2019ll take it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut not all viewers enjoyed the musical medley. Following the performance, DeBose faced an avalanche of snarky criticism and memes on social media, which led to the star deactivating her Twitter account.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the show, BAFTAs producer Nick Bullen came to DeBose\u2019s defense. \u201cI think it\u2019s incredibly unfair, to be frank. I absolutely loved it,\u201d Bullen told<\/a>\u00a0Variety<\/em>. \u201cEverybody I\u2019ve spoken to who was in the room absolutely loved it. She\u2019s a huge star, she was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother admirer of DeBose\u2019s rap was Lizzo<\/a>, who recreated the viral rap moment<\/a> during a recent concert. DeBose caught wind of the TikTok video and reposted it on her Instagram page. \u201cThe internet is wild y\u2019all!\u201d the West Side Story<\/em> star wrote<\/a>. \u201cAppreciate all the love.\u201d<\/p>\n
