\n\tAngela Bassett<\/a> did the thing. The actress sent a DM to Ariana DeBose<\/a> to make sure she was OK after the loud criticism her BAFTA Awards<\/a> opening musical medley<\/a> received last weekend.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI DMed her last night,\u201d Bassett told Variety<\/a><\/em> on the red carpet of the NAACP Image Awards Saturday night (Feb. 25). \u201cI did. It was beautiful, it was beautiful, it was beautiful. I just wanted to make sure she was OK because it\u2019s a lot of attention, and she is A-OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDeBose \u2014 who won the BAFTA supporting actress award last year for West Side Story<\/em> \u2014 returned to the awards ceremony this year to open the show on Feb. 19 with a rap performance inspired by this year\u2019s female nominees, including Bassett, who was the subject of perhaps the most talked-about lyric.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat was the assignment. Like, \u2018Come celebrate women,\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Absolutely!\u2019 We did that and it was fun. Not gonna lie, I had a blast,\u201d DeBose told<\/a> BBC Radio 2\u2019s\u00a0The Zoe Ball\u00a0Breakfast Show<\/em><\/em>. <\/p>\n

\n\tBut before DeBose spoke out about it, she had been barraged with snarky criticism and memes of her performance, which led to deactivating her Twitter account.<\/p>\n

\n\tBAFTAs producer Nick Bullen also came to DeBose\u2019s defense<\/a>, noting, \u201cI think it\u2019s incredibly unfair, to be frank. I absolutely loved it. Everybody I\u2019ve spoken to who was in the room absolutely loved it. She\u2019s a huge star, she was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
