{"id":610886,"date":"2023-02-23T02:52:42","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T08:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/23\/how-ghana-and-gambia-are-planning-to-bolster-their-digital-economies\/"},"modified":"2023-02-23T02:52:42","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T08:52:42","slug":"how-ghana-and-gambia-are-planning-to-bolster-their-digital-economies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/23\/how-ghana-and-gambia-are-planning-to-bolster-their-digital-economies\/","title":{"rendered":"How Ghana and Gambia are planning to bolster their digital economies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js_movable-ads-post-contents\">\n<p>As legacy economies continue to fall out of favor the world over, Ghana and Gambia are ramping up efforts to build tech-based economies.<\/p>\n<p>In a time when most economies run by oil, manufacturing, and agriculture are shifting to digital economies, the two countries with a combined population of 35 million don\u2019t want to be sidelined.<\/p>\n<p>Now, they have joined Nigeria, Rwanda, Morocco, and Djibouti as members of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) that aims to link Africa and Gulf countries in the realization of a common digital economy agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Other members are Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, and Pakistan. They collectively represent <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/dco-welcomes-omantel-as-first-observer-organization-from-the-sultanate-of-oman-or7zhqi7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nearly $2 trillion<\/a><\/span> in GDP and a market of nearly 600 million people.<\/p>\n<p> Africa faces funding shortfalls in tech infrastructure, challenges in implementing data protection policies, and slow adoption of frontier tech skills, but hopes  that partnerships supporting its digital economy agenda could unlock financing.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h89440\"><a id><\/a>Gambia is struggling<\/h2>\n<p>The Gambian government continues <span><a href=\"https:\/\/pp22.itu.int\/en\/itu_policy_statements\/ousman-a-bah-gambia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to pursue<\/a><\/span> the realization of a digital transformation agenda, even in the midst of economic turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s digital economy has largely remained underdeveloped leaving it ill-prepared for the global reality of digitally enabled economies. Mobile internet is both slow <span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/africas-most-affordable-mobile-internet-is-in-algeria-1849586465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">and expensive<\/a><\/span> while penetration is limited.<\/p>\n<p>The <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedocs.worldbank.org\/en\/doc\/1f7221545bf1b7c89b850dd85cb409b0-0400072021\/related\/The-Gambia-Digital-Economy-Diagnostic-Report-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gambia faces considerable challenges<\/a><\/span>\u2014including a fragile economy and poverty\u2014in its quest for digital transformation despite being a coastal country; a factor that presents it with an opportunity for easy marine fiber optic cable infrastructure development.<\/p>\n<p>Such challenges result in key supply-side barriers such as high prices, low quality, and feeble reliability of broadband services,  leaving downstream development of the digital economy largely stifled, according to a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedocs.worldbank.org\/en\/doc\/1f7221545bf1b7c89b850dd85cb409b0-0400072021\/related\/The-Gambia-Digital-Economy-Diagnostic-Report-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Bank report<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p> Minister of Communications and Digital Economy in Gambia Ousman Bah said his country is gearing up towards a skill-based economy to close the digital divide. \u201cWe need to collaborate with other nations to share tech knowledge. We have to be solution providers,\u201d he said at the at the second general assembly of the organization in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Feb. 5.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedocs.worldbank.org\/en\/doc\/1f7221545bf1b7c89b850dd85cb409b0-0400072021\/related\/The-Gambia-Digital-Economy-Diagnostic-Report-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only 2%<\/a><\/span> of the country\u2019s adult population used mobile money according to World Bank, an indicator of the low penetration of digital financial services.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h89441\"><a id><\/a>Ghana is on the right path<\/h2>\n<p>Ghana has experienced a digital technology growth by leaps and bounds, and now <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/ghana-one-sub-saharan-africas-digital-leaders-mohammad-j-sear?trk=pulse-article_more-articles_related-content-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ranks among the leaders in sub-Saharan Africa<\/a><\/span> in tech adoption. <\/p>\n<p>A 2019 <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thedocs.worldbank.org\/en\/doc\/412821598381054828-0090022020\/original\/GhanaDE4ALOWRes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey by the World Bank<\/a><\/span> indicates that the west African country ranks third, behind Nigeria and South Africa in terms of how digital platforms are transforming the economy. <span><a href=\"https:\/\/african.business\/2021\/07\/finance-services\/kenya-and-ghana-lead-fintech-charge-across-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">It is second<\/a><\/span> after Kenya in terms of mobile money adoption in Africa.<\/p>\n<p> Ghana\u2019s minister of communications and digitalization Ursula Owusu noted that it is time Africa devised its direction of the future and trained its population on the latest advancements in tech. \u201cWe have to be in control of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We have to create the opportunities today,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s government is in addition <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/market-intelligence\/ghana-digital-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prioritizing efforts in more digital technologies<\/a><\/span> in other sectors such as the implementation of its digital initiatives including national ID issuance, digital address systems, and land records digitization.
