The vote rejected a 5.5 per cent pay increase offered by the firm.<\/p>\n<p>RMT spokesman John Millington told <em>Construction News<\/em>: \u201cThis dispute, unlike the national industrial action, is strictly related to pay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a multimillion-pound company and these are highly skilled workers doing highly specialised work. These workers are not satisfied with the pay offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Millington said that negotiations had been taking place with Balfour for a number of months.<\/p>\n<p>He said that details of the pay increase sought by the workers were confidential, but said that the union has reached pay deals leading to increases of between 7 and 10 per cent with other firms including ScotRail.<\/p>\n<p>The ballot of 109 workers saw 68 vote for strike action, meeting the threshold required under legislation for strike action to be valid.<\/p>\n<p>The workers are now set to down tools during the following periods:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10pm on Friday 3 March to 10am on Sunday 5 March<\/li>\n<li>10pm on Friday 10 March to 10am Sunday 12 March<\/li>\n<li>10pm on Friday 17 March to 10am Sunday 19 March<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In October, Balfour topped the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/financial\/cn100-2022-the-top-100-uk-contractors-12-09-2022\/\">2022 CN100<\/a> of the UK\u2019s biggest contractors by turnover, with revenue of \u00a37.2bn last year, although its profit of \u00a387m equated to just a 1.21 per cent profit margin.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the industrial action, RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: \u201cThe cost-of-living crisis has affected all workers and our members are not prepared to pay the price while the company enjoy huge revenues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBalfour Beatty is a highly profitable company and they need to use some of their excess wealth to reward their workers properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Balfour Beatty spokesperson said: \u201cWe remain committed to working closely with the RMT union to reach an appropriate outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, as these discussions remain ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\">The <a title=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/balfour-beatty\/balfour-beatty-set-for-1-5bn-network-rail-deal-14-03-2019\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/balfour-beatty\/balfour-beatty-set-for-1-5bn-network-rail-deal-14-03-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Link CRSA was created in 2019\">CRSA was created in 2019<\/a> to work on the 10-year contract for the development, design and delivery<\/span>\u00a0of track renewals and crossings, as well as associated infrastructure works across the London North West, London North East and East Midland routes.<\/p>\n<p>Balfour employees working on the contract <a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/balfour-beatty\/balfour-beatty-rail-workers-threaten-strike-action-after-empty-pay-offer-24-05-2021\/\">previously threatened to strike<\/a> in 2021 after being offered no pay rise for 2020.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Related articles<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/contractors\/balfour-beatty\/balfour-workers-vote-for-march-strike-action-20-02-2023\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Colin Marrs<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Balfour Beatty workers will carry out three 36-hour strikes on consecutive weekends next month in a dispute over pay.
