The end of Derek Carr\u2019s tenure with the Raiders was anything but smooth. <\/p>\n

It featured a visit with the Saints<\/a>. Then, a decision that he wouldn\u2019t accept a trade<\/a> to New Orleans \u2014 or any other NFL team \u2014 that ultimately led to his Feb. 14 release<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But in an \u201cNFL Total Access\u201d segment on NFL Network<\/a>, David Carr, his brother and former NFL quarterback, said that Carr \u201cwould\u2019ve loved to have been involved in those [trade] conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was never asked to be in those conversations,\u201d David, who the Texans selected No. 1 overall in 2002, said last week. \u201cSo I think that was the hardest part for him, is he wanted to make it work, but then in the end it didn\u2019t and they released him, so now both parties will go their separate ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carr, who was in Mexico and \u201cthe sunshine\u201d on the day of his release, was \u201cin the dark for a while\u201d with the team he\u2019d spent all nine years of his career with, David said. He wanted to utilize his \u201csuperpower\u201d by changing the play at the line of scrimmage, dissecting the defense like Peyton Manning, but David said he wasn\u2019t able to use that skill under first-year Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels throughout the year.<\/p>\n

McDaniels, who the Raiders hired prior to the 2022 season, was Carr\u2019s sixth coach in nine seasons with Las Vegas \u2014 joining Dennis Allen, Tony Sparano, Jack Del Rio, Jon Gruden and Rich Bisaccia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was just a difference of opinion as far as how to run offensive football and how to play offensive football,\u201d David said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re a veteran quarterback, you\u2019ve got veteran guys, they want some control at the line of scrimmage.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Carr\u2019s release placed him in what David called a \u201cunique opportunity.\u201d Carr has made four Pro Bowls throughout his career, including one in 2022. He became one of the top free agent options at quarterback, and he has already visited the Jets \u2014 a weekend trip ESPN\u2019s Jeff Darlington described as a \u201cpositive\u201d one<\/a> \u2014 since parting ways with the Raiders.<\/p>\n

Now, Carr gets to \u201chand-pick\u201d where he signs his next contract. Carr had signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension<\/a> with the Raiders in April, but his release before Feb. 15 allowed the team to avoid the $40 million that become guaranteed.<\/p>\n

David will help his younger brother sift through various criteria, too, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a smart guy,\u201d David said. \u201cHe knows what he wants. He\u2019s very focused on making the right decision for his family and his future. He still wants to play some good football.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
