If I had to write a culinary-themed horror movie, the plot would revolve around a\u00a0garbage disposal. You know, that black mysterious hole in your sink that screams at you every time you turn it on. I get it\u2019s great at making\u00a0food scraps disappear, but for the first six months of having one in my apartment, I was terrified of gashing a finger. So needless to say, I never learned how to clean the\u00a0garbage disposal either.<\/p>\n

According to the pros, this is bad kitchen etiquette. A feral\u00a0garbage disposal filled with lingering scraps and food residue can create undesirable smells, says Aurielle Sayeh, founder of\u00a0Moody Maids<\/a>, a cleaning company operating in New York City and Atlanta. Cleaning a\u00a0garbage disposal is also important to keep it working effectively, says Jennifer Rodriguez, the chief hygiene officer at\u00a0Pro Housekeepers<\/a>, which serves cities throughout the US. \u201cA properly cleaned\u00a0garbage disposal can last for years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

It turns out that the whole process is less intimidating than I thought. Here\u2019s what we need to know about how to clean a\u00a0garbage disposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How should you clean your\u00a0garbage disposal?\u00a0<\/h2>\n

While there are\u00a0various<\/a>\u00a0garbage disposal\u00a0cleaning products and\u00a0drain cleaners on the market, most of the experts I chatted with opt for a few simple home\u00a0hacks, which are gentler on your machine\u2014and your plumbing. These methods are about as hands-off as it gets. No elbow grease,\u00a0scrub brush, or\u00a0bleach required.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Ice Cube Method:<\/strong>
Eric Schultz, director of product management at InSinkErator, uses a cocktail of simple ingredients. Pack\u00a02\u00a0cups ice cubes<\/strong>,\u00a01 Tbsp.\u00a0baking soda<\/strong>, and\u00a01 lemon slice<\/strong> into your\u00a0garbage disposal and grind with cold\u00a0running water until it\u2019s all gone. It may\u00a0fizz a little at first from the\u00a0baking soda and lemon, but you don\u2019t have to stress about ice chips flying about (those little garbage disposal flaps keep everything contained). The\u00a0ice cubes help break up any food that might be stuck onto your disposal, the\u00a0baking soda provides some scrubbing power, and the\u00a0citrus peels help\u00a0deodorize everything.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Lemon-Only Method:<\/strong>
Rodriguez prefers to just use lemons. \u201cThe\u00a0acidity of lemon juice can cut through grease and\u00a0grime, and it has antibacterial properties that fight odors,\u201d she says. Take\u00a01 lemon<\/strong> and cut it into wedges, including the\u00a0lemon peels. Run your cold tap and then start the\u00a0garbage disposal. Feed each wedge into the disposal, one piece at a time\u2014until you hear the grinding stop. This method might be loud, Rodriguez says, but \u201cthe extra work of the blades going through the rind will even help clean them, leaving your\u00a0garbage disposal smelling fresh and lemony.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Vinegar Method:<\/strong>
Meanwhile, the Moody Maids team uses an apple cider vinegar and\u00a0baking soda combo (though any cheap vinegar like\u00a0white vinegar could do the trick here). For\u00a0this route<\/a>, pour\u00a0\u00bd cup\u00a0baking soda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a01\u00a0cup vinegar<\/strong> into the disposal and let it sit for 10 minutes. Run\u00a0hot water from your\u00a0faucet, then turn on the\u00a0garbage disposal until the mixture and\u00a0food particles have washed away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
