{"id":609370,"date":"2023-02-18T07:49:18","date_gmt":"2023-02-18T13:49:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/18\/employers-claim-to-prioritise-diversity-employees-remain-dubious\/"},"modified":"2023-02-18T07:49:18","modified_gmt":"2023-02-18T13:49:18","slug":"employers-claim-to-prioritise-diversity-employees-remain-dubious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/18\/employers-claim-to-prioritise-diversity-employees-remain-dubious\/","title":{"rendered":"Employers claim to prioritise diversity, employees remain dubious"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/visuals\/ComputerWeekly\/Hero Images\/diversity-inclusion-Fokussiert-adobe_searchsitetablet_520X173.jpg\" data-credit=\"Fokussiert - stock.adobe.com\"  width=\"520\" height=\"173\" alt><\/p>\n<p>Fokussiert &#8211; stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"content-header\">\n<h2>Young tech employees claim diversity initiatives aren\u2019t working, despite more than half of employers claiming to focus on the issue<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"content-center\">\n<ul>\n<li><i data-icon=\"1\"><\/i><\/li>\n<li><i data-icon=\"2\"><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"contributors-block\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/Clare-Ellen-McDonald-140px.jpg\" alt=\"Clare McDonald\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><span>By<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/contributor\/Clare-McDonald\">Clare McDonald,<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>Business Editor <\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tPublished: <span>17 Feb 2023 11:30<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section id=\"content-body\">\n<p>Younger tech workers don\u2019t believe diversity initiatives are working, according to research by Wiley Edge.<\/p>\n<p>The training provider found that 10% of people aged 18 to 24 working in tech claim any efforts their employers are making to improve diversity are not working, and 12% said it is not a priority where they work.<\/p>\n<p>But 53% of employers claimed they are actively working to increase the diversity profile of their technology teams.<\/p>\n<p>Becs Roycroft, senior director of global emerging talent at Wiley Edge, said: \u201cThese findings highlight the importance of not only implementing anti-bias recruitment tactics, but also ensuring that these tactics are communicated to existing employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing so can make a big difference to the way that young people perceive their employer and provide them with the reassurance they might need that improving diversity is genuinely a priority for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While ongoing efforts are being made by industry, government and education providers to address the lack of diversity in the technology sector, there are still diversity gaps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252486554\/Techs-diversity-gap-slow-growth-for-minority-groups\">BCS figures from 2020 found<\/a> that women made up 17% of tech workers, 8% of IT specialists were of Indian ethnicity, 2% were from a black, African, Caribbean or black British background, and 2% from Pakistani or Bangladeshi backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the reasons for this lack of diversity, many point towards a lack of inclusive culture as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/feature\/Inclusion-everyone-advice-from-experts-for-improving-tech-diversity\">barrier to attracting and retaining diverse talent<\/a> for the tech sector.<\/p>\n<p>Some avoid the sector altogether because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252526202\/Why-the-Most-Influential-Woman-in-UK-Tech-2022-created-a-book-of-role-models\">they don\u2019t see others like them in tech roles<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/365531034\/More-than-30-girls-in-tech-dont-become-tech-undergrads\">do not consider their skills good enough<\/a>, and in some cases people already in the industry end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252527299\/Women-more-likely-to-leave-tech-jobs-than-men\">leaving because of a lack of inclusion<\/a>. Around 10% of tech employers believe their efforts to improve diversity in their teams has worked, and 9% believe their tech teams are already diverse.<\/p>\n<p>The steps firms are taking to advance diversity varies, with 40% saying they have invested in anti-bias training for managers, 88% of which said it led to an improvement in diversity in their tech teams, and 38% requesting diverse candidate lists when hiring.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to recruitment practices, 39% make an effort to ensure job descriptions are neutral, and 32% anonymise CVs so they don\u2019t know the gender or ethnicity of the person when making a decision.<\/p>\n<p>Just over half of employers say these steps have led to a significant improvement in the diversity of tech teams, and 37% said there have been improvements but more needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research by Wiley Edge found that more than half of businesses are struggling to recruit young people from diverse backgrounds, with many young people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252525731\/Young-people-in-tech-unhappy-despite-inclusion-push\">claiming to have had negative experiences in the industry<\/a>, in some cases causing them to leave the sector completely.<\/p>\n<p>It was suggested that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252511740\/Young-people-are-leaving-tech-because-of-bad-culture\">bad culture in organisations<\/a> was to blame for young people\u2019s poor experiences, and more needed to be done to address the lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252522400\/60-of-tech-workers-say-more-needs-to-be-done-on-diversity\">diversity and inclusive culture<\/a> in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Its current research found that just over a third of young people have noticed the efforts made to improve the diversity of tech teams, and 27% said
