She will be replaced by the company\u2019s current No. 2 executive, longtime product chief Neal Mohan.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"top\" progressive ad-id=\"article-0-top\"><\/fbs-ad><\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, after nearly 25 years here, I\u2019ve decided to step back from my role as the head of YouTube and start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and persona\u200b\u200bl projects I&#8217;m passionate about,\u201d Wojcicki wrote in an email to employees. \u201cThe time is right for me, and I feel able to do this because we have an incredible leadership team in place at YouTube.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wojcicki, a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/lists\/power-women\/?sh=7ec48bda5a95\" target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/lists\/power-women\/?sh=7ec48bda5a95\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/lists\/power-women\/?sh=7ec48bda5a95\" aria-label=\"Forbes\u2019 Power Women list\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes\u2019 Power Women list<\/a>, became CEO of YouTube in 2014, after previously heading Google\u2019s display and video ads business. She famously rented out her Menlo Park garage in 1998 to Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, joining the company a year later as employee number 16.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement, which was earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2023\/2\/16\/23602636\/youtube-ceo-susan-wojcicki-leaving-neal-mohan\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2023\/2\/16\/23602636\/youtube-ceo-susan-wojcicki-leaving-neal-mohan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2023\/2\/16\/23602636\/youtube-ceo-susan-wojcicki-leaving-neal-mohan\" aria-label=\"reported\">reported<\/a> by Vox, comes as Google has faced recent challenges. Last month, Google parent Alphabet laid off 12,000 employees, or 6% of the company. YouTube, as well as other rivals, has also been trying to fend off the ascendency of TikTok. Kids and teens are now spending more time watching videos on TikTok than YouTube, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/07\/13\/kids-and-teens-watch-more-tiktok-than-youtube-tiktok-91-minutes-in-2021-youtube-56\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/07\/13\/kids-and-teens-watch-more-tiktok-than-youtube-tiktok-91-minutes-in-2021-youtube-56\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/07\/13\/kids-and-teens-watch-more-tiktok-than-youtube-tiktok-91-minutes-in-2021-youtube-56\/\" aria-label=\"according to\">according to<\/a> data from the tech company Qustodio. YouTube has responded to the threat by creating its own short-form video product, called Shorts.<\/p>\n<p>Wojcicki\u2019s tenure at YouTube has also been marked by some controversies. The video site has been criticized for helping to spread Covid and election misinformation, conspiracy theories, and toxic content aimed at children.<\/p>\n<p>Wojcicki said she will remain at Google and Alphabet as an advisor.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s leaders lauded Wojcicki on her way out. \u201cSusan has a unique place in Google history and has made the most incredible contribution to products used by people everywhere,\u201d Page and Brin said in a statement. \u201cWe&#8217;re so grateful for all she&#8217;s done over the last 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Google CEO Sundar Pichai said: \u201cSusan played a key role in Google\u2019s origin story, and over the years her leadership opened up entirely new chapters for the company.
