In addition to being synonymous with the MOBA genre and more popular than the last wheel of imported brie in a San Francisco Whole Foods, League of Legends <\/em>is becoming a bona fide media franchise. On top of multiplayer games like Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runtera,<\/em> and the mobile spinoff Wild Rift<\/em>, not to mention the popular Netflix series Arcane<\/em>, publisher Riot has announced no less than three new single-player spinoffs from notable indie developers, all set for release in 2023. <\/p>\n

\n<\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Each game is a distinct work, expanding on different aspects of <em>LoL\u2019s <\/em>dizzyingly divergent lore. First up is <em> <\/em>(or as it\u2019s stylized, \u201c<em>CONV\/RGENCE<\/em>\u201c). It\u2019s a 2D action-platformer starring the time-bending Ekko as he bounces around the streets of Zaun and Piltover. It comes from Double Stallion, makers of the steampunk racing-beat-em-up <em>Speed Brawl<\/em>, with a similar cartoony art style. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CONV\/RGENCE: A League of Legends Story - Official Teaser Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BohXpNlLH74?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em><\/em> is a 2D action-RPG starring the spell-slinging, chain-swinging Sylas. It\u2019s stuffed with gorgeous pixel art, which will look familiar to anyone who played developer Digital Sun\u2019s 2018 hit <em>Moonlighter<\/em>. That was a dungeon crawler that had you work as a shopkeeper in between fighting off hoards of monsters. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Featurette | Song of Nunu: A Developer\u2019s Story\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9E5BCiqg9Rs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The last and most ambitious single-player spinoff is <em><\/em>, a full 3D platforming game from <em>Rime <\/em>and <em>Sexy Brutale <\/em>developer Tequila Works. <em>LoL <\/em>characters Nunu and his big yeti-like companion Willump need to work together to survive in a vast frozen land. It sort of looks like a mix of <em>Zelda <\/em>and <em>The Last Guardian<\/em>, albeit much cuter than the latter. <\/p>\n<p>All three games are subtitled \u201c<em>A League of Legends Story<\/em>,\u201d like the turn-based RPG <em>Ruined King <\/em>from 2021. And, according to the trailer from Riot\u2019s incubator company Riot Forge, all three of them will release sometime in 2023 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch.
