File Photo by Peter Foley\/UPI | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/News_Photos\/lp\/41b8d9098618de4acd8e99c25471bc78\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">License Photo<\/a><\/p>\n<article itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p><span>Feb. 14 (UPI) &#8212;<\/span> Kia and parent company Hyundai confirmed Tuesday the Korean automakers are releasing new anti-theft software at no cost to vehicle owners.<\/p>\n<p>The free software fix applies to millions of current vehicles currently lacking theft deterrents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/press-releases\/hyundai-kia-campaign-prevent-vehicle-theft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> said in a statement.\n<\/p>\n<p>The fix is in response to an ongoing challenge on social media platform TikTok, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/08\/tiktok-challenge-spurs-rise-in-thefts-of-kia-hyundai-cars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">encourages or dares people to steal certain makes<\/a> and models of vehicles. People are being challenged to take the vehicles using a common USB cord. The vehicles most susceptible to that type of theft are Kia and Hyundai models from between 2010 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Thefts of those specific vehicles have increased dramatically over the last <a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/news\/local-news\/lapd-blames-tiktok-challenge-for-increase-in-kia-hyundai-thefts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">year in places such as Los Angeles<\/a> and St. Petersburg, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>The new software announced Tuesday will lengthen the alarm on certain cars from 30 seconds to a full minute. They also will require an ignition key in order to start the vehicles, which lack ignition immobilizers.<\/p>\n<p>Kia and Hyundai owners can call a toll free number to schedule an appointment for their vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hyundai will also provide its customers with a window sticker alerting would-be thieves that the vehicle is equipped with anti-theft protection.
