Idris Elba further explained his stance on social media, noting that he simply believes that professions \u201care not defined by race.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he clarified that he certainly considers himself a Black man and noted that it is other people\u2019s prerogative to \u201cdefine [their] work by [their] race.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, he said what he said, but he doesn\u2019t think it should be a big deal.<\/p>\n

During a recent interview with\u00a0Esquire<\/em><\/a>, Idris Elba candidly addressed why he doesn\u2019t describe himself as a \u201cBlack actor<\/a>\u201d anymore.<\/p>\n

Idris Elba Says The World Is \u2018Obsessed\u2019 With Race<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0Thor: Ragnarok\u00a0<\/em>star started off by noting that people \u201care obsessed with race.\u201d As a result, he feels as though people\u2019s \u201caspirations\u201d and \u201cgrowth\u201d can be negatively impacted by this \u201cobsession.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that, in his eyes, racism is \u201conly as powerful as you allow it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAs humans, we are obsessed with race. And that obsession can really hinder people\u2019s aspirations, hinder people\u2019s growth. Racism should be a topic for discussion, sure. Racism is very real. But from my perspective, it\u2019s only as powerful as you allow it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Actor Doesn\u2019t Center His Work Around His Race: \u2018It\u2019s Just Skin\u2019<\/h3>\n

While on the subject, Idris pointed out, \u201cIf we spent half the time not talking about the differences but the similarities between us, the entire planet would have a shift in the way we deal with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the spirit of not highlighting the differences that exist between people, Idris decided to stop referring to himself as a \u201cBlack actor,\u201d as it \u201cputs [him] in a box.\u201d After all, \u201cour skin is no more than\u2026just skin,\u201d as he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stopped describing myself as a Black actor when I realised it put me in a box. We\u2019ve got to grow. We\u2019ve got to. Our skin is no more than that: it\u2019s just skin. Rant over.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Idris Elba proceeded to also share that he didn\u2019t become an actor to break down barriers. Instead, he merely thought he \u201ccould do a good job at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, he doesn\u2019t feed into the hype surrounding him being \u201cthe first Black to do this or that.\u201d He explains his rationale by noting, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be the first Black. I\u2019m the first Idris.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t become an actor because I didn\u2019t see Black people doing it and I wanted to change that. I did it because I thought that\u2019s a great profession and I could do a good job at it. As you get up the ladder, you get asked what it\u2019s like to be the first Black to do this or that. Well, it\u2019s the same as it would be if I were white. It\u2019s the first time for me<\/em>. I don\u2019t want to be the first Black. I\u2019m the first Idris.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In other words, Idris is killin\u2019 the acting game for the sake of being a great star\u2014not for any recognition that centers on him being a Black trailblazer.<\/p>\n
