{"id":606978,"date":"2023-02-10T16:33:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T22:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/10\/alabama-teens-stage-walkout-over-alleged-censorship-of-black-history-month-program\/"},"modified":"2023-02-10T16:33:00","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T22:33:00","slug":"alabama-teens-stage-walkout-over-alleged-censorship-of-black-history-month-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/10\/alabama-teens-stage-walkout-over-alleged-censorship-of-black-history-month-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama Teens Stage Walkout Over Alleged Censorship Of Black History Month Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><main><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n                                <picture>\n                                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theshaderoom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GettyImages-1357167161-scaled.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Black History Month program protest\">\n                                <\/picture>\n                            <\/div>\n<div>\n<p><html><body><\/p>\n<p>Students at an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theshaderoom.com\/darius-miles-jamea-jonae-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama<\/a>\u00a0high school are taking a stand against administrators allegedly trying to whitewash their institution\u2019s Black History Month program.<\/p>\n<h3>An Administrator Allegedly \u2018Felt Uncomfortable\u2019 About Slavery &#038; Civil Rights Being Included<\/h3>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/abc3340.com\/news\/local\/students-protest-after-allegedly-being-told-to-omit-events-from-black-history-month-program-walkout-hillcrest-high-school-tuscaloosa-civil-rights-movement-slavery-civil-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC 33\/40<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reports that the situation unfolded earlier this week at Hillcrest High School over in Tuscaloosa, as over 200 students participated in a walkout.\u00a0Notably, the protest went down in response to school administrators allegedly asking the students to cut major events from their Black History Month program.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">STUDENTS PROTEST AT HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL: More than 200 students in Tuscaloosa County participated in a walk out protest at Hillcrest High school after a controversy about Black History Month. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fI5GElJFX8\">pic.twitter.com\/fI5GElJFX8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tim reid (@TimReidReporter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimReidReporter\/status\/1623386161627426817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>J\u2019Niyah Suttles, a high school senior, specifically noted, \u201cWe were told we couldn\u2019t talk about slavery and civil rights because one of our administrators felt uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Students React To BHM Program Censorship: \u2018Why Can\u2019t I Talk About It?\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>In response, J\u2019Niyah shared that she found the matter \u201cvery disturbing.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cMy protector from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., for you to tell me I can\u2019t talk about something that is dealing with my culture is very disturbing, it\u2019s very confusing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jada Holt, another student at Hillcrest High School, reacted to the news by noting that history \u201ccan\u2019t be erased.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhy am I being censored about my culture something that is rooted in me? Why can\u2019t I talk about it? History is history and it\u2019s already been made, and it can\u2019t be erased.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ultimately, Jamiyah Brown\u2014a senior who choreographed the Black History Month program\u2014organized the walkout. Powerfully, she explained her motivation by proclaiming, \u201cWithout our history, we are nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWithout our history, we are nothing. Without teaching our youth where we come from, how can we move forward?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There are so many things about this country that disgust me. Most of those things are somehow connected to the GOP. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nzEShUhtdd\">https:\/\/t.co\/nzEShUhtdd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jimmy Malone,liberal @malonespeaking everywhere (@malonespeaking) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/malonespeaking\/status\/1624021722335744003?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 10, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>The Superintendent Pledges To \u2018Ensure All Students Know That They Are Valued\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>Lisa Young, the president of the NAACP\u2019s Tuscaloosa Branch, was also vocal in her opposition to the matter. In fact, she straight-up said, \u201cI don\u2019t know how you can talk about Black history in this country without talking about slavery or the civil rights movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also noted that she is \u201cangry\u201d over the situation and wants to \u201cmake their school a safe place.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m angry and part of me feels like we failed our students. We want to see what we can do to assist them, and make their school a safe place.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr. Keri Johnson, the superintendent of the Tuscaloosa County School System, also reportedly issued a statement on the matter. Notably, she said that they\u2019re \u201cputting together a plan to make sure [the] students feel heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe Tuscaloosa County School System supports our students\u2019 right to peacefully demonstrate. A number of our Hillcrest High students have concerns about the culture within their school. We care deeply about our students, and it is important that their concerns are heard.
