Salinger\" rel=\"noopener\">J.D. Salinger<\/a>&#8216;s <i>The Catcher in the Rye <\/i>was returned to a Manitoba library more than 33 years after its due date.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Walton said she and her husband were doing some spring cleaning when she came across a box of books that <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9475599\/winnipeg-overdue-library-book-returned-30-years-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contained the tome<\/a> she had checked out from the St. Vital Library when she was a college student at Glenlawn College in the late 1980s.\n<\/p>\n<p>Librarians at the Winnipeg Public Library <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wpglibrary\/status\/1622747180493676545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initially thought the book<\/a> had been due back in 1999, due to the unclear stamp, but Walton confirmed the due date had actually been Nov. 10, 1989, making it more than 33 years overdue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was a little horrified that it was this late,&#8221; Walton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/manitoba\/overdue-catcher-in-the-rye-winnipeg-1.6743691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told CBC News.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She delivered the book in person along with some &#8220;chocolates of contrition&#8221; for library staff.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Bourrier-Lacroix, administrative coordinator of collections and borrower services at the Winnipeg Public Library, said the book was in excellent condition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was surprised at what good shape it was in, but I guess that&#8217;s what happens when it sits in a box for 33 years,&#8221; she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>Walton was not fined for her late return, as the library did away with late fees in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Odd_News\/2023\/02\/10\/canada-Winnipeg-Public-Library-overdue-Catcher-in-the-Rye-33-years\/3501676063827\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Johnathon Roberie<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feb. 10 (UPI) &#8212; A copy of J.D.
