Oklahoma demonstration riles the right"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class>Hundreds of supporters of transgender people gathered at Oklahoma\u2019s capitol this week to protest a slate of proposed legislation that would bar certain gender-affirming medical care for trans minors and young adults in the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>Though local reports describe the protest as peaceful, some right-wing media personalities have been comparing it to the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>The protestors gathered Monday on the fourth floor of the Capitol in Oklahoma City outside of the House chamber about an hour before Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican, delivered his State of the State address, <a href=\"https:\/\/kfor.com\/news\/oklahoma-legislature\/trans-rights-group-peacefully-protests-at-oklahoma-capitol\/\">according to NBC affiliate KFOR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" ><source ><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-02\/230208-trans-rights-protest-al-1435-2d226c.jpg\" alt=\"Trans-rights activists protest at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"><\/picture><figcaption><span>Trans-rights activists protest Monday at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City. <\/span><span>Sue Ogrocki \/ AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class>The group chanted \u201cTrans lives matter\u201d and \u201cWe are Oklahoma,\u201d KFOR reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>Some protesters held signs, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErinInTheMorn\/status\/1623035206125948964\">a video shared on social media<\/a>. One read, \u201cWe are not a threat, so stop making us a target\u201d and said at the bottom that hormone replacement therapy \u201csaves lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>KFOR reported that law enforcement let the demonstrators into the Capitol, and each person had to walk through a metal detector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>However, right-wing media commentators have been claiming on social media \u2014\u00a0and cable news \u2014 that the protest was not peaceful. One said that protesters had \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JackPosobiec\/status\/1622810446637170689\">stormed and occupied<\/a>\u201d the Capitol, while another <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrAndyNgo\/status\/1622885158553546753\">said that \u201ca mob of trans activists<\/a> took over the Oklahoma capitol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>Fox News host Tucker Carlson, on his show Tuesday night, called it an \u201cinsurrection.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cA group of so-called trans activists stormed the state Capitol. &#8230; Their goal is to keep child mutilation legal,\u201d he said, according <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyCaller\/status\/1623296586296983553\">to a video<\/a> of the segment shared by several people on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>Local news outlets, including KFOR, reported that those characterizations were not accurate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>Daniel Seitz, the communications director for the Oklahoma House Republican Caucus, also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dseitzgop\/status\/1623359268647849986\">said in a statement<\/a> on Twitter that none of the protesters had broken the law.<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cThe Oklahoma House will support and defend the First Amendment rights of all who come to have their voices heard,\u201d the statement read, in part. \u201cRegarding Monday\u2019s protest, there were no reported incidents or unlawful behavior and any national narrative to the contrary is false.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" ><source ><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2023-02\/230208-trans-rights-protest-al-1436-3d9647.jpg\" alt=\"Trans-rights activists protest at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"><\/picture><figcaption><span>Trans-rights activists protest Monday at the state Capitol in Oklahoma City. <\/span><span>Sue Ogrocki \/ AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class>The protesters gathered to oppose a group of bills that target gender-affirming medical care. Some of the bills would completely bar minors from receiving transition-related care, including one that would prohibit such care for people up to 26 years old. Other bills would bar providers of gender-affirming care from receiving public funds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>State lawmakers have introduced at least 30 bills targeting LGBTQ people so far this year, according to an NBC News analysis. At least half of these aim to restrict gender-affirming medical care.<\/p>\n<p class>During his State of the State address Monday, Stitt said he would sign a bill to ban transition-related surgery for minors, though doctors who provide such care say surgeries are rarely performed on minors.<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t let a minor get a permanent gender altering surgery in Oklahoma,\u201d Stitt said in his address, <a href=\"https:\/\/kfor.com\/news\/local\/gov-stitt-discusses-tax-cuts-education-and-ban-on-gender-affirming-care-in-state-of-the-state-address\/\">KFOR reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class>Ramona Diaz, one of the protest organizers, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news9.com\/story\/63e18d87f894d5088db1d16c\/protestors-gather-in-response-to-slew-of-bills-banning-trans-care\">KWTV, a local CBS affiliate<\/a>, that she is worried about the bill to bar gender-affirming care for people up to 26, because she is 23 and receives hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can purchase a firearm,\u201d she told 9News. \u201cI can smoke marijuana. I can drink alcohol.
