Disney announced the changes minutes after it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/08\/disney-dis-earnings-q1-2023.html\">posted its most recent quarterly earnings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/video\/disney-welcomes-bob-iger-back-as-ceo-in-surprise-announcement-154769989762\"><picture class><source media=\"(min-width: 1240px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 758px)\" ><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_focal-760x428,f_auto,q_auto:best\/mpx\/2704722219\/2022_11\/1669034895307_tdy_news_7a_bob_iger_disney_221121_1920x1080-wl542k.jpg\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\"><\/picture><\/a><\/div>\n<p class>On Wednesday during its quarterly earnings call with investors, Disney also announced it would be cutting $5.5 billion costs, which will be made up of $3 billion from content, excluding sports, and the remaining $2.5 billion from non-content cuts.<\/p>\n<p class>Disney also said it would be eliminating 7,000 jobs from its workforce. That would be about 3% of the roughly 220,0000 people it employed as of Oct. 1,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/ix?doc=\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/0001744489\/000119312523014219\/d431948d10ka.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to an SEC filing<\/a>, with roughly 166,000 in the U.S. and about 54,000 internationally.<\/p>\n<p class>Disney\u2019s stock rose more than 5% in after-market trading.<\/p>\n<p class>Media companies, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/WBD\/\">Warner Bros. Discovery<\/a>, have been pulling back on content spending and looking to make their streaming businesses profitable. Heightened competition has led to slowing subscriber growth, and companies have been looking to find new avenues of revenue growth. Some, like Disney+ and Netflix, have added cheaper, ad-supported options.<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cWe will take a very hard look at the cost of everything we make across television and film,\u201d Iger said on a call with investors Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class>The reorganization has been underway since Iger returned to the helm of Disney, replacing his hand-picked successor Bob Chapek.<\/p>\n<p class>The entertainment group will be led by top lieutenants Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, who are each\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/04\/disney-ceo-top-contenders-succeed-bob-iger.html\">considered contenders<\/a>\u00a0to take over for Iger in less than two years. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro will lead the ESPN segment, while Josh D\u2019Amaro, already the head of Disney\u2019s parks, experiences and products segment, will remain in control.<\/p>\n<p class>The future of ESPN under Disney\u2019s ownership has been a question for some time for investors. Last year, activist investor Third Point had urged the company to spin out ESPN. Disney and Third Point\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/30\/disney-reaches-deal-with-activist-investor-third-point-will-add-former-meta-executive-to-its-board.html\">later reached a deal<\/a>, after reversing course on its thoughts for the future of ESPN.<\/p>\n<p class><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/21\/disney-board-reached-out-to-iger-friday-after-concerns-over-earnings.html\">Chapek\u2019s removal<\/a>\u00a0came shortly after Disney had reported its fiscal fourth quarter earnings,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/08\/disney-dis-earnings-q4-2022.html\">disappointing on profit and certain key revenue segments<\/a>. Chapek had also warned that Disney\u2019s strong streaming numbers would taper off in the future. He had also told employees shortly thereafter that Disney would be cutting costs through hiring freezes, layoffs and other measures.<\/p>\n<p class>Shortly after his return,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/11\/21\/kareem-daniel-disney-head-of-media-and-chapeks-right-hand-is-out-following-igers-return.html\">Iger sent a memo<\/a>\u00a0to employees announcing the business would be reorganized, particularly the Disney Media and Entertainment unit. The reorganization immediately meant the departure of Kareem Daniel, the head of the company\u2019s previous media and entertainment unit, and right hand to Chapek.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class>Iger had said he would put more \u201cdecision-making back in the hands of our creative teams and rationalize costs\u201d at the time. The goal would be to have a new structure in place in the coming months, with elements of DMED remaining, CNBC reported.
