Natives of the southern Indian state of Kerala, they are also known to emigrate to far corners of the world. A smooth blend of these two instincts of theirs is now giving the world a high.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Kerala\u2019s expats in western countries have nursed an incipient boom in liquor brands soaked in the tropical haven\u2019s popular culture, socio-political milieu, and quirks.<\/p>\n<p>They have launched drinks such as Kalikut 1498 beer in Poland, Maharani gin in Ireland, Mandakini Malabar Vaatte in Canada, Komban beer in the UK\u2014all in the past seven-odd years. The latest product, simply called Malayali beer, was introduced in Poland in November. <\/p>\n<p>The labels of these beverages carry symbols of Kerala\u2019s traditional arts and iconic lines from Malayalam language\u2014<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/dictionary\/english\/malayan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">different from Malayan<\/a><\/span>\u2014movies, and even its curly script to proudly proclaim the makers\u2019 roots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main idea behind launching Kalikut 1498 was to export Kerala\u2019s culture, packaged in fusion with a global one. Basically, I love being a Malayali. And the beer is an expression of that feeling,\u201d said Lijo Philip, the brand\u2019s promoter and a native of Kochi, Kerala\u2019s commercial capital.<\/p>\n<div data-inset-url=\"https:\/\/vertagear.pxf.io\/c\/379647\/960320\/12793?subId1=IV-&#038;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vertagear.com%2Fcollections%2Fvalentines-day-sales-up-to-100-dollars-off\" data-inset-category=\"CommerceInsetMobile\">\n<p>G\/O Media may get a commission<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kalikut 1498 is a play on Calicut, an ancient town in the state and the year Portuguese sailor Vasco da Gama, the first European to take the sea route to India, arrived. The beer was launched in <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/20175804.krakow-bargain-breaks-available-beautiful-historic-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beautiful Krakow<\/a><\/span> on Malayali New Year\u2019s Day on Aug. 17, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>To promote his beer, Philip even opened a restaurant called K2K, or Kerala To Krakow, serving authentic Kerala cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravel and beer go hand-in-hand. We added nostalgia to the mix. We are keen on telling the Poles about Kerala\u2026explain to them why it stands out,\u201d Philip, who has lived in Europe for 25 years, told Quartz. The 4,866 others from Kerala living in Poland, together, make Malayalis the biggest Indian community in that country, according to Philip, who is the joint secretary and a founding member of the Kerala Association of Poland.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h7095\"><a id><\/a>Kerala\u2019s penchant for liquor and foreign shores<\/h2>\n<p>Picturesque Kerala has India\u2019s highest per capita alcohol consumption <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/117cr-liquor-bought-in-kerala-ahead-of-onam-says-data-101662746764038.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rate at 8.5 litres<\/a><\/span>, according to the Hindustan Times, while<strong> <\/strong>the national average is 5.7 litres. A National Family Health Survey shows <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onmanorama.com\/news\/kerala\/2021\/12\/02\/alcohol-consumption-highest-in-kerala-indian-states-alappuzha-malappuram.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nearly 20% of its population<\/a><\/span> age 15 and older drinks. Serpentine queues to buy liquor are a regular Kerala feature.<\/p>\n<p>Alcohol abuse is a key reason, alongside white-collar unemployment, worried families send their young men abroad, especially to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. <span><a href=\"https:\/\/norkaroots.org\/web\/guest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A little over 10%<\/a><\/span> of Kerala\u2019s estimated 40 million people live on foreign shores today. <\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/acrobat.adobe.com\/link\/review?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:6b7c7df7-2bcf-3129-b425-ac3d61c06b18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women are emigrating<\/a><\/span>, too, but<em>\u00a0<\/em>for other reasons and to countries such as the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalayalis have graduated from low-skilled jobs to high-skilled ones,\u201d said S Irudaya Rajan, who holds the chair at the Institute of Migration Studies, Thiruvananthapuram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA large number of those migrating even to the Gulf today ultimately have more advanced countries in sight. If not for themselves, at least for their children. It\u2019s like a Kochi-Dubai-London flight. The stopover may be in Dubai, but London is where it is headed,\u201d Rajan said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h7096\"><a id><\/a>A cocktail of Mohanlal, empowered women, and history<\/h2>\n<p>Abish Cherian was an early bird, relatively speaking. A native of Kothamangalam municipality in Kerala\u2019s Ernakulam district, he has lived in Ontario, Canada, since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2021, he, along with his brother Alias Cherian and partner Sareesh Kunjappan, invested around Canadian $100,000 into introducing Kerala\u2019s traditional brew, the <em>vaatte<\/em> or arrack, in their adopted country.<\/p>\n<p>Conventionally, <em>vaatte<\/em> is made from either coconut palm sap, cashew apple or other fruits. Team Cherian chose sugarcane jaggery. It named the brew Mandakini Malabar Vaatte, keeping non-Malayalis in mind. Mandakini, also the name of a hugely popular <span><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/entertainment\/bollywood\/mandakini-recalls-rs-1-2-lakh-for-a-film-could-get-replaced-by-actor-for-rs-75000-8149770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bollywood star of the 1980s<\/a><\/span>, roughly translates to \u201ccelestial river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe planned to sell 2,000 bottles in the first six months but sold out in two weeks. That, too, almost 100% to Malayalis. People were driving up from various parts of Canada. Today we sell around 3,000 bottles a month,\u201d Abish Cherian said.<\/p>\n<p>The lede of a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manoramaonline.com\/news\/latest-news\/2021\/09\/03\/malabari-arrack-named-mandakini-is-a-big-hit-in-canada-and-other-countries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Malayalam daily<\/a><\/span>\u2019s report on the company\u2019s instant success read: \u201cThey didn\u2019t expect Mandakini, brewed in the hearts of Kothamangalam natives, to flare up this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cherian\u2019s <em>vaatte<\/em> is now available in Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton, as well as in four US states, Illinois, Texas, Arizona, and Massachusetts. A Dubai-based firm promoted by another Malayali also sells it at Kochi airport\u2019s duty-free shop.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is Ireland\u2019s Maharani gin. Launched in June 2020 by Bhagya Lakshmi Barrett and her husband Robert Barrett, its label says \u201c<em>viplava<\/em> (revolutionary) spirit\u201d in Malayalam. That, as Bhagya Lakshmi Barrett told <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outlookindia.com\/outlooktraveller\/explore\/story\/70771\/maharani-gin-by-rebel-city-distillery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outlook Traveller<\/a><\/span>, is a hat tip to her native Kerala\u2019s matrilineal society and the world\u2019s \u201c<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outlookindia.com\/outlooktraveller\/explore\/story\/70771\/maharani-gin-by-rebel-city-distillery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">revolutionary women<\/a><\/span>\u201d in general.<\/p>\n<p>The label of Warsaw\u2019s Malayali beer, the youngest of the lot, has the unmistakable headgear of Kathakali, Kerala\u2019s most recognized classical artform, along with the sunglasses and twirled moustache made iconic by the state\u2019s matinee idol Mohanlal. The bottle also carries some unforgettable movie lines.<\/p>\n<p>Renowned Malayalam writer and social commentator Paul Zacharia, however, said these symbols are only an attempt at adding exotica and mystique. He doesn\u2019t see any cultural rootedness in it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat these guys are doing is part of the success story of Malayalis all over the world in business. It is interesting. It is culturally curious, using Malayali names as brands and managing to make them stick,\u201d Zacharia said.<\/p>\n<p>The cultural symbols help activate a ready customer base, though. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur customers are mostly Polish&#8230;But Malayalis will quickly identify with the brand name and spread the word. They arranged transportation, hotel rooms, and 5,000 SIM cards with 20GB of free data.<\/p>\n<p>The fortitude of those 20, along with their sense of duty, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-64315370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">inspired Nallur<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in the genetic make-up of Malayalis to fight and experience a crisis instead of turning on the fight-or-flight mode. A sense of collective responsibility is ingrained in us and that\u2019s something we have carried from Kerala. Our civil society\u2019s resilience during the various crises of recent years is testimony to that,\u201d Philip said.<\/p>\n<p>He was referring to Kerala\u2019s fairly successful handling of a string of disasters over the past five years: a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/southeastasia\/outbreaks-and-emergencies\/health-emergency-information-risk-assessment\/surveillance-and-risk-assessment\/nipah-virus-outbreak-in-kerala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nipah virus outbreak<\/a><\/span> and catastrophic flooding (2018), Cyclones Ockhi (2017) and Tauktae (2021), and, of course, covid-19. The response staged by the state\u2019s civil society\u2014<span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kcjoseph99\/status\/1036475199208607744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">politicians<\/a><\/span>, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onmanorama.com\/entertainment\/entertainment-news\/2018\/08\/20\/tovino-thomas-flood-relief-works-kerala.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">movie stars<\/a><\/span>, <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/states\/kerala\/2020\/mar\/31\/army-of-volunteers-how-a-kerala-community-kitchen-feeds-the-needy-amid-covid-19-lockdown-2123912.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">common citizens<\/a><\/span>, and others\u2014exemplified the state\u2019s <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7510531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">participatory social democracy<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>That collective memory, Philip said, has strengthened Malayalis the world over, nudging them to look out for each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur cinema has given us an unforgettable line: \u2018Wherever you go, I\u2019ll be there,\u2019\u201d Nallur said, referring to a memorably comic scene from the 1989 movie <em>Vandanam<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Philip, meanwhile, expects Poland to be the next Dubai for Malayalis. And, he said, \u201cwhen they come, they will have a thriving Malayali sub-culture waiting for them.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>To those committed to the Malayali unofficial pass time, that could be read as: \u201cMalayalis of the world, unite!
