\n\tMC Lyte<\/a> has one of the industry\u2019s most identifiable voices. From smaller events like the Black Music Collective Honors\u2019 dinner<\/a> to grandiose shows like the BET Awards<\/a> and the 2023 GRAMMY Awards<\/a>, the Brooklyn-bred rapper has voiced it all. Finally, Lyte has revealed how her time as a voiceover sensation came to be.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Thursday (Feb. 2), Mastercard and Femme It Forward <\/a>hosted the Pass The Mic\u2026Hustle & Grow panel featuring\u00a0Lyte,\u00a0alongside Lil Kim<\/a>, Misa Hylton<\/a>, Jozzy<\/a>, and Rhonda X\u2014moderated by VIBE contributor Naima Cochrane<\/a>. The panel was part of the \u2018She Runs This\u2019 series.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen discussing her career transition from rapper to acting<\/a> and voiceover work, Lyte, 52, explained<\/a>, \u201cEverything that I do is everything that I wanted to do when I was 7 years old. I wanted to be on radio, I wanted to use my voice. I saw Tootie [played by Kim Fields] on\u00a0The Facts of Life<\/a><\/em>, and I was like, \u2018I got to get to Los Angeles because I need to do some acting.\u2019 I wanted to do all those things, but I also realized I had to prepare myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe continued, \u201cI couldn\u2019t just show up because [I\u2019m] MC Lyte; I had to know the skill set. I went to acting school, I went to voice-over coaching classes and workshops. I was just prepared for the moment so as the opportunities lined up, I was able to show up and show out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLyte later spoke on the importance of sisterhood<\/a> and working with women. \u201cAll that I\u2019d heard was that working with women wasn\u2019t a good thing because they were so emotional,\u201d she said. \u201cI adopted this thought, but the truth was, I had to become responsible in the way that I communicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pioneering rapper\u2014whose debut album, Lyte as a Rock<\/em>, turns 35<\/a> this year\u2014added, \u201cThere is a way that you can communicate with love and care and kindness, and I had not learned that when I [first started out]. What I can say now is this business that I\u2019m in is the best for me because I know what sisterhood is.\u201d<\/p>\n
