Inflation and contract complications have slashed Ardmore\u2019s profit by more than half, with pre-tax profit shrinking to \u00a36.5m in the year to 30 September 2022, compared with \u00a315.3m the year prior.<\/p>\n

In newly released accounts, Ardmore said it made a \u00a327m provision relating to a series of unspecified contract difficulties.<\/p>\n

It also missed its \u00a3550m turnover target for the year, only managing to post \u00a3435.1m. This was still up from \u00a3404.8m in the previous year, reaching a record level for the firm.<\/p>\n

In a statement accompanying the accounts, directors said that although they had recognised the challenge of inflation during the period, they did not anticipate \u201csignificant\u201d macro-economic and geopolitical events that would \u201cturbocharge inflation\u201d and restrict the supply of materials from China and Europe.<\/p>\n

The firm also struggled with the \u201congoing challenge of remedial works\u201d. It reported that there was a marked increase in defect reports over the last few years, which it attributed to \u201cheightened concerns\u201d linked to 2017’s Grenfell Tower fire.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere it said \u201cfour pipeline opportunities\u201d had their start dates delayed, helping to dent turnover.<\/p>\n

\u201cSupply-chain failure\u201d on three other projects and a serious scaffold collapse at Ardmore\u2019s \u00a3155m scheme at Hammersmith<\/a> Town Hall in west London in May 2022, when two workers were seriously injured, also pushed down revenue, it added.<\/p>\n

A combination of factors has pushed directors to \u201creset [their] expectations\u201d for the coming year, targeting a \u201ctrimmed\u201d turnover of just under \u00a3450m and a post-tax profit of just under \u00a37m.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe expectation is this will allow the inflationary pressures on fixed-price construction contracts to work its way through before margins recover to more normal levels in 2024,\u201d the firm’s statement added.<\/p>\n

It also said that overheads will come under \u201cgreater scrutiny\u201d and it will need to make some serious strategic decisions. \u201cIt is essential we collectively reduce risk, and root out waste and inefficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
