It retained 96% of its initial power conversion efficiency after continuous maximum power point (MPP) tracking for 1,000 hours.<\/p>\n<p><time datetime=\"2023-02-02T16:30:06+01:00\" itemprop=\"datePublished\" title=\"Thursday, February 2, 2023, 4:30 pm\">February 2, 2023<\/time> <span itemprop=\"author\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/Person\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/author\/emilianobellini\/\" title=\"Posts by Emiliano Bellini\" rel=\"author\">Emiliano Bellini<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>An international research group has fabricated an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2022\/12\/09\/inverted-perovskite-solar-cell-with-22-15-efficiency-83-92-fill-factor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inverted<\/a> perovskite solar cell based by using <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">polymer to improve the low-defect crystallinity of the perovskite film. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2022\/11\/03\/silicon-heterojunction-solar-cell-with-23-83-efficiency-via-molybdenum-oxide-hole-collector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dipoles<\/a>, which are <span lang=\"en\"><span>molecules with opposite charges<\/span><\/span> on the ends, are commonly used in solar research for interfacial engineering strategies in organic and perovskite solar cells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The scientists built the solar cell with an <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">active area of 9.6 mm<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2<\/span> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2022\/04\/22\/inverted-perovskite-solar-cell-with-25-efficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">p-i-n structure<\/a>, which means the perovskite cell material is deposited onto the hole transport layer, and then coated with the electron transport layer, unlike with conventional n-i-p device architecture. Inverted perovskite solar cells typically show strong stability, but lag behind conventional devices in terms of conversion efficiency and cell performance.<\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The researchers said that dipoles on the perovskite sur<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">face can suppress ion migration, while facilitating <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">interfacial charge extraction and enhancing <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">hydrophobicity. They used a type of dipole known as b-pV2F and said it enabled a more compact perovskite film with an enlarged grain size of around 480 nm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cAtomic force microscopy images showed that b-pV2F reduced the surface roughness from 54.4 to 41.1 nm, which is expected to ameliorate coverage with charge-transporting layers,\u201d they said.<br \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The team measured the entire film formation process via <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">grazing incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(GIWAXS) and found that b-pV2F controls the perovskite crystallization by reducing perovskite formation energy, which results in a more ordered crystal structure. <\/span>The cell configuration features a <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">glass\/indium tin oxide (ITO<\/span>) substrate, an electron acceptor made of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2021\/06\/21\/black-perovskite-solar-cell-with-15-efficiency-via-thermal-evaporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)<\/a>, a perovskite layer, <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2021\/06\/21\/black-perovskite-solar-cell-with-15-efficiency-via-thermal-evaporation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)<\/a> layer<\/span>, and a silver (Ag) metal contact.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mid-article-bibblio\" data-action=\"Internal\" data-title=\"Popular content\" data-catalogue=\"Articles\" data-location=\"Mid Single Article\">\n<h3>Popular content<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>The device achieved a power conversion efficiency of 24.2% under standard illumination conditions, an open-circuit voltage of <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">1.18 V<\/span>, a short-circuit current of <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">24.8 mA\/cm<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">, and a fill factor of 84.3%. The Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT) confirmed the results. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cThe stability of unencapsulated devices under working conditions shows that target perovskite solar cells retain 96% of the initial power conversion efficiency after continuous <span lang=\"en\"><span>maximum power point <\/span><\/span>tracking for 1,000 hours,\u201d the scientists said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>They described the cell technology in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.add7331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highly efficient p-i-n perovskite solar cells that endure temperature variations<\/a>,\u201d which was recently published in <em>Science<\/em>.
