\n\tEmmanuel Acho<\/a> has come under fire for his claims that he doesn\u2019t have \u201cgenerational trauma\u201d like many Black Americans due to his Nigerian lineage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring a recent interview with Van Lathan<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Higher Learning Podcast<\/a><\/em>, the conversation between Lathan, 42, and Acho, 32, progressed into one about race, with the tone growing combative<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tA viral clip from the conversation began to make its rounds on social media last week, showing the former NFL star speaking about his experience as a Black person and claiming his Nigerian roots have barred him from generational issues and plight<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen white people say, \u2018Well, racism doesn\u2019t exist,\u2019 I know why they say that. Because I\u2019ve been in them rooms when they\u2019re saying that,\u201d Acho said in the clip. \u201cWhen I kick it with Black people and they\u2019re like, \u2018All white people are racist,\u2019 I know why you\u2019re saying that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAll the while, I have the privilege and luxury of not having generational trauma [of slavery], because my parents were born in Nigeria. So my method is removing some of the sting, because I don\u2019t have that sting, and trying to deliver it in a manner that people can receive it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I made no such suggestion, that was the reach the host of the show made and led the listener to (at the 39:45 mark). I stated my lineage to allow understanding for my predisposition to be *less* hostile. It was giving the listener insight as to why. Not implying I\u2019m better.<\/p>\n

\n\tVan took offense to what the ex-athlete articulated and began to express how his rhetoric could be seen as divisive for Black Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLet me tell you why what you just said offends me,\u201d the podcast host began. \u201cYou\u2019re saying that you didn\u2019t have generational trauma, and you didn\u2019t mean it this way, but you saying in some way, meaning that your delivery method to white people is going to be either more effective or more sanitized is, to me, dangerous, and let me tell you why.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEverybody that you just named, and what you\u2019re talking about, does what they do in different ways. I don\u2019t think that any of the things that they do are necessarily harmful, but what I could say, is a Black man, a prominent one, acting as an emotional butler for white people, and serving them the most milquetoast, un-spicy, unseasoned brand of racial discourse and accountability possible, could definitely be harmful. Like, we\u2019re fighting for our lives, and to me, having a conversation like that, at that particular time, it\u2019s not that it\u2019s a different method. Everybody has a different method. It\u2019s that it\u2019s the wrong method.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAcho\u2019s stance also garnered criticism from social media users, with some claiming he suggested, \u201che\u2019s better equipped than Black Americans.\u201d The Dallas, TX native hopped on Twitter to clarify his comments regarding his Nigerian ethnicity.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Hip-Hop Homicides<\/em> host <\/a>quote tweeted the FS1 Sports host\u2019s clarification and provided the clip where he talks about his lineage. He then questions the athlete on why he \u201cothered\u201d himself from Black Americans with his comments. Finally, the ex-Philadelphia Eagle claimed the whole interview was a \u201cpublic set up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not sure what you intended to convey by stating your Nigerian background frees you of \u2018generational trauma\u2019 and takes the \u2018sting\u2019 out of your convos with white people,\u201d Van expressed. \u201cBut it feels like your purposefully othered yourself from the descendants of slaves. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n
