The judge presiding over T.I.<\/strong><\/a> and his wife Tameka \u201cTiny\u201d Harris<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s lawsuit against a toymaker has been declared a mistrial, after jurors heard a woman testifying she\u00a0\u201cdid not want to support a company that steals from African Americans and their ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The lawsuit, filed against MGA Entertainment, claims the toy company stole from their daughter\u2019s likeness for their LOL Surprise Dollz toy line, which the woman in question called cultural appropriation.<\/p>\n

Zonnique Pullins, T.I.\u2018s stepdaughter, had previously been a part of the girl rap group OMG Girlz, whose likeness bares a shockingly resemblance to the aforementioned dolls, The Shade Room<\/strong><\/a> previously reported.<\/p>\n

Jury Overhears Woman Making Prejudicial Comments In Rapper T.I.\u2019s Lawsuit Against A Toy Company<\/h3>\n

On Wednesday, Senior U.S. District Judge James V. Selna declared the mistrial, agreeing with an argument made by MGA\u2019s lawyers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not want to support a company that steals from African Americans and their ideas,\u201d the woman was overheard saying.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Jurors in @MGAEnt<\/a> v. @Tip<\/a> heard from a woman who said she stopped buying OMG Dolls because “I did not want to support a company that steals from African Americans and their ideas.”<\/p>\n

According to court documents obtained by crime reporter Meghann Cuniff, Judge Selna deemed the woman\u2019s testimony regarding cultural appropriation a \u201crant\u201d that is prejudicial against the defendants, which in this case is MGA Entertainment.<\/p>\n

Rapper\u2019s Lawyer Attempts To Get Judge To Reconsider, Claiming The Woman\u2019s Testimony Wouldn\u2019t Help Their Case<\/h3>\n

T.I.\u2019s lawyer, Erin Ranahan, tried to get Judge Selna to reconsider, claiming the testimony wasn\u2019t anything helpful for their case.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWe did not want that theme before this jury in particular. This is not Los Angeles. There\u2019s not a single Black person on the jury.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The rapper and his wife are suing a toymaker for using his stepdaughter\u2019s likeness in a series of dolls, which they claim ripped off her look while working in the rap group OMG Girlz.<\/p>\n

In April 2022, Pullins accused the doll company\u2019s LOL Dolls of plagiarizing the aesthetic of OMG Girlz, a group she was in during her teenage years, The Shade Room\u2018s Nick Fenley wrote for Blavity at the time.<\/p>\n

The Harris family were amidst a trial to defend the intellectual property rights of former girl rap group OMG Girlz, Cuniff reports.<\/p>\n

Lawsuit Has \u201cBig Cultural Misappropriation, Racism Issues Being Considered In Litigation,\u201d Reporter Says<\/h3>\n

In an Instagram post Zonnique made in April, she polled her followers on the matter, having them choose between \u201cHope you got paid\u201d and \u201cNope, don\u2019t see (the resemblance).\u201d<\/p>\n

Roughly 95 percent of respondents sided with Pullins.<\/p>\n

The trial itself is going to be about MGA\u2019s LOL Dolls and whether or not they infringe on OMG Girlz. The doll maker was actually the first to initiate litigation back in 2020, but now T.I. and Tiny have gone on the offensive with a counterclaim.<\/p>\n

Cuniff reports the suit has\u00a0\u201cbig cultural misappropriation and racism issues being considered in litigation, among other pre-trial issues,\u201d she tweeted.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear as to when a new trial will begin.<\/p>\n
