Here, we\u2019ll look more closely at secular trends towards the cloud and its effect on backup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/feature\/Cloud-era-disaster-recovery-planning-Assessing-risk-and-business-impact\">and disaster recovery (DR)<\/a>, including for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252490101\/Veeam-buys-Kasten-to-get-a-boost-in-Kubernetes-backup\">container-based workloads<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252516130\/How-Veeam-helped-grocery-chain-Franprix-escape-its-backup-hell\">Veeam<\/a> survey questioned 4,200 IT leaders and implementers on a variety of data protection drivers, challenges and strategies across 28 countries.<\/p>\n<p>All charts are from the Veeam <em>Data protection trends report 2023<\/em>.<\/p>\n<section data-menu-title=\"Workloads split between cloud and on-prem\">\n<h3><i data-icon=\"1\"><\/i>Workloads split between cloud and on-prem<\/h3>\n<p>In four years of the Veeam survey, while also asking about future plans, the clear trend has been towards a fairly even split between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/feature\/The-3-2-1-backup-rule-Has-cloud-made-it-obsolete\">cloud and on-premise<\/a> as a location for server processing.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, 38% and 30% of physical and virtual servers respectively were run on-site, with about another third (32%) running in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>That has since dropped to just under half being run on-site (24%\u00a0physical and 24% virtual) and 52% in a cloud hyperscaler.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure data-img-fullsize=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart1onpremAndCloud.JPG\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart1onpremAndCloud_mobile.JPG\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart1onpremAndCloud_mobile.JPG 960w,https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart1onpremAndCloud.JPG 1280w\" data-credit=\"Veeam\"><figcaption>\n   <i data-icon=\"z\"><\/i>Chart 1: Percentage of respondents\u2019 physical and virtual servers in the datacentre, and hosted in the cloud<br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-menu-title=\"Backup a good fit for the cloud\">\n<h3><i data-icon=\"1\"><\/i>Backup a good fit for the cloud<\/h3>\n<p>Mirroring the trend towards some server capacity being hosted in the cloud, backup is also heading that way.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the split was 60\/40 between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtarget.com\/searchdatabackup\/Create-your-data-backup-strategy-A-comprehensive-guide\">backup<\/a> using on-prem tools only and use of the cloud. By the time respondents were asked to predict that split in 2025, those proportions come out as 74\/26, but in favour of the cloud.<\/p>\n<figure data-img-fullsize=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart2backupToCloud.JPG\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart2backupToCloud_mobile.JPG\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart2backupToCloud_mobile.JPG 960w,https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart2backupToCloud.JPG 1280w\" data-credit=\"Veeam\"><figcaption>\n   <i data-icon=\"z\"><\/i>Chart 2: Your backup targets, now and in the future<br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Heavy dependence on the cloud is also in evidence when it comes to disaster recovery and how organisations recover from outages.<\/p>\n<p>Here, 48% recover to the cloud, either from cloud-resident backups (31%), to DR-as-a-service from a managed service provider (7%), or to cloud-hosted servers from cloud-based replicas.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, customers that recover to on-site servers from the cloud make up 38% of the total. Only 16% of restores have no cloud involvement, recovering from on-site backups to on-site servers.<\/p>\n<figure data-img-fullsize=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart3howRestore.JPG\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart3howRestore_mobile.JPG\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart3howRestore_mobile.JPG 960w,https:\/\/cdn.ttgtmedia.com\/rms\/computerweekly\/VAR23chart3howRestore.JPG 1280w\" data-credit=\"Veeam\"><figcaption>\n   <i data-icon=\"z\"><\/i>Chart 3: How do you restore backups to servers?<br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Further cloud preference emerged when the Veeam survey asked respondents what they think is the most important attribute of an \u201centerprise backup\u201d solution, protection of infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and software as a service (SaaS) came out on top.<\/p>\n<p>The next most desirable attributes were to be reliable and manageable across multiple geographies, but fourth was the ability to protect enterprise applications such as SAP HANA and Oracle. It\u2019s quite possible this reflects the split between on-prem and the cloud noted above.<\/p>\n<p>And, to put a finer point on this in a backup context, it probably shows that for lots of data \u2013 effectively secondary data and rarely, if ever, accessed again \u2013 the cloud is a good fit if data is held in cheap, \u201ccold\u201d tiers. Others rank fairly closely as the most impactful cause of outages. Most back up the storage the data lives in (47%), while 22% back up the underlying database components.
