2023 opened up with Khabib Nurmagomedov stepping away from the sport<\/a>. \u201cThe Eagle,\u201d who has since focused his efforts on fight promotion and coaching since his retirement in 2020, is taking an indefinite sabbatical to spend more time with his family. <\/p>\n

That also means Khabib won\u2019t be there to help longtime comrade Islam Makhachev in his first title defense at UFC 284 against Alexander Volkanovski. Makachev confirmed the news in a recent interview with FOX Sports Australia<\/em><\/a>, and he doesn\u2019t see it as a potential problem. <\/p>\n

\u201cBecause when the cage door close, no one is there for you,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, it\u2019s going to be different. But I\u2019ve already fought without him a couple of times. And he cannot always be with me.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, it\u2019s very good when he is here. I always like when he is with me because he knows all the games being played. He knows what you need for the fight, for the weight cut, you don\u2019t have to worry about any of this.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always good when you have someone as experienced as him. You don\u2019t have to spend your energy thinking about other things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Makhachev has seen Khabib\u2019s hustle in his post-career endeavors and understands the former champ\u2019s decision to take some time off. <\/p>\n

\u201cI understand that he has to spend more time with his family,\u201d Makhachev said of Khabib. \u201cBecause with all the fighting, the training, his family miss him too. Even though he is retired he\u2019s still traveling a lot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I understand (the decision).\u201d<\/p>\n

From his end, Volkanovksi hopes Khabib\u2019s absence won\u2019t be brought up in the conversation, should he end up victorious. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey better not use it as an excuse once this is all done,\u201d he said in the same interview. \u201cAt the end of the day, Makhachev will prepare and we\u2019re going to fight.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t need someone to hold his hand. Doesn\u2019t need someone to be in there with him. That\u2019s not a real fighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when my hand gets raised, that better not come up.\u201d<\/p>\n

UFC 284 happens on February 12 in Perth, Australia. Co-headlining the event is an interim featherweight title bout between Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett. <\/p>\n
