{"id":600413,"date":"2023-01-23T06:49:42","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T12:49:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/23\/magnetic-method-to-clean-pfas-contaminated-water\/"},"modified":"2023-01-23T06:49:42","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T12:49:42","slug":"magnetic-method-to-clean-pfas-contaminated-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/23\/magnetic-method-to-clean-pfas-contaminated-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Magnetic method to clean PFAS contaminated water"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Researchers at The University of Queensland have pioneered a simple, fast and effective technique to remove PFAS chemicals from water. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Using a magnet and a reusable absorption aid that they developed, polymer chemist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aibn.uq.edu.au\/profile\/3985\/cheng-zhang\"><span>Dr Cheng Zhang<\/span><\/a><span> and PhD candidate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aibn.uq.edu.au\/profile\/5847\/xiao-tan\"><span>Xiao Tan<\/span><\/a><span> at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aibn.uq.edu.au\/article\/2022\/10\/minjun-kim-porous-carbon-better-batteries-and-working-small-save-planet\"><span> Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology<\/span><\/a><span> have cleared 95 per cent of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from a small amount of contaminated water in under a minute.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cRemoving PFAS chemicals from contaminated waters is urgently needed to safeguard public and environmental health,\u201d Dr Zhang said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cBut existing methods require machinery like pumps, take a lot of time and need their own power source.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cOur method shows it is possible to remove more of these chemicals in a way that is faster, cheaper, cleaner, and very simple.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cBecause our process does not need electricity, it can be used in remote and off-grid communities.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>PFAS substances are synthetic compounds used in industry and consumer products since the 1950s, but they persist in the environment potentially leading to human health problems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>The PFAS removal technique developed by Dr Zhang and Mr Tan involves treating contaminated water with a new solution, called a magnetic fluorinated polymer sorbent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cThis solution that we developed coats the PFAS particles and then we can use a magnet to attract, isolate and remove them,\u201d Dr Zhang said. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cThe solution itself can be reused up to 10 times.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>\u201cOur team will now scale up the testing and we hope to have a commercially available product ready in the next three years.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OFkKWX2ym_o\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>The work has been funded by the Australian Research Council, the National Health and Medical Research Council, The Chemours Company and the US Department of Defense, and was overseen by AIBN head of research Professor Andrew Whittaker. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>The study has been published in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/anie.202213071\"><i><span>Angewandte Chemie<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><strong><span>Media: AIBN Communications, Alex Druce, <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/mailto:a.*****@****du.au\" data-original-string=\"iAJC0FDqgxd4vkZF2Iex+g==7f4dT2hOlecI\/fsS0BNxUthpD\/XNqt1zAEWu3Na7+PjGWg=\" title=\"This contact has been encoded by Anti-Spam by CleanTalk.
