Janisse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>\n\tWith horror displaying its continued dominance at the box office \u2014 <em>Nope<\/em>, <em>Smile<\/em>, <em>Scream<\/em>, <em>Barbarian<\/em>, <em>Halloween Ends<\/em> and <em>The Black Phone<\/em> were all among the top 40 releases of 2022 before <em>M3GAN<\/em> launched the new year with a $30 million opening \u2014 James A. Janisse is eagerly riding the gory wave.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe content creator founded the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/youtube\/\" id=\"auto-tag_youtube\" data-tag=\"youtube\">YouTube<\/a> channel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@DeadMeat\/videos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dead Meat<\/a> in 2017 and saw his subscriber base reach 5.94 million by the end of 2022, up from 4.5 million two years earlier. The content \u2014 which includes interviews with directors and actors, podcasts and trivia-filled looks at films \u2014 has logged more than 2 billion views.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tA Detroit-area native who moved to L.A. in 2012, Janisse (also known as Dead Meat James) is not only the host but also president and executive producer of Dead Meat, which he co-owns with his wife, Chelsea Rebecca, who founded the Dead Meat podcast. His approach combines a love of horror with a sense of humor, creating entertainment that\u2019s also educational for devoted horror fans and the horror-curious.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDirector Mike Flanagan (<em>The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>, <em>Doctor Sleep<\/em>) is a fan. \u201cIt\u2019s not just commentary, it\u2019s not just critique, it\u2019s excellent entertainment in its own right, and beautifully produced by James and Chelsea,\u201d he tells <em>THR<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tJanisse \u2014 who credits <em>Scream<\/em> for drawing him into the genre (though when he first watched it as a kid, \u201cthe opening scene was so scary that I ran out of the living room and hid from the rest of the movie,\u201d he says) \u2014 believes horror is massively popular today because of \u201cthe high quality of horror movies in the past five-ish years.\u201d Janisse continues: \u201cIt started in 2017 when the critical success of <em>Get Out<\/em>, and the commercial success of <em>It<\/em> brought a double whammy of attention to the genre. Horror seems to get popular when the real world feels the scariest. Films that have received recent <em>Kill Count<\/em> treatment include <em>Prey<\/em>, <em>Gremlins<\/em>, <em>Malignant<\/em>, <em>Bride of Chucky<\/em> and <em>Dude Bro Party Massacre III<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tJanisse, 33, shares that 60 percent of Dead Meat\u2019s annual revenue comes from ads on YouTube; other sources of income include sponsorship deals (25 percent), donations from supporters on Patreon (8 percent) and ads and sponsorships for a Dead Meat podcast, which he started in 2018 (5 percent).<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/James-A.-Janisse-and-wife.jpg?w=1500\" alt=\"Dead Meat Founders - James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite>Dead Meat<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\tLast year, streaming service Shudder sponsored the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VR91N_EmBEw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dead Meat Horror Awards<\/a> (chosen by Janisse and Rebecca), in which horror stars like <em>The Nun<\/em>\u2018s Bonnie Aarons announced the winners. And Dead Meat is developing a horror feature comedy directed by Max Deleo and written by Nick Skardarasy that is \u201ccentered on growing up and what that means for old college friendships,\u201d he says. As for why Dead Meat continues to grow, Janisse notes that \u201chorror fans can sense when someone\u2019s a genuine fan.
