And \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/2\/3\/22262520\/sundance-film-festival-2021-pandemic-these-days-pink-cloud\">after two years of being a completely virtual event due to the pandemic<\/a> \u2014 in 2023, the festival has returned with a new hybrid format. That means there\u2019s still an online portion, but the in-person part is back, with attendees descending on Park City, Utah, to catch movies in theaters. In the past few years, notable films like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/1\/23\/16924782\/sundance-2018-horror-hit-hereditary-review-toni-collette-ari-aster-gabriel-byrne\"><em>Hereditary<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/4\/22956531\/after-yang-kogonada-review\"><em>After Yang<\/em><\/a> have made a splash at the festival, and in 2023, there will be premieres like <em>The Pod Generation<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PVnIMvVEkrA\"><em>Infinity Pool<\/em><\/a>, and <em>Cat Person<\/em> (based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2017\/12\/11\/cat-person\">the <em>New Yorker<\/em> short story<\/a>) to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Verge<\/em> will be watching as many Sundance movies as humanly possible and bringing you the latest and most interesting developments right here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<section id=\"updates-section\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>\n<p>Polite Society looks like it might be Sundance\u2019s most kick-ass debut.<\/p>\n<p>Out of context, the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/2018\/04\/05\/bend-it-like-beckham-oral-history\/\">bending it<\/a> like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/11\/10\/23451451\/john-wick-chapter-4-trailer-keanu-reeves-bill-skarsgard\">John Wick<\/a> might not make all that much sense, but that\u2019s exactly the energy all throughout a new trailer for director <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/638a1782d406b210f8f2cafb\">Nida Manzoor\u2019s debut film <em>Polite Society<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>premiering at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/19\/23560909\/sundance-film-festival-2023-news-trailers-reviews\">Sundance this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Set in London, <em>Polite Society <\/em>tells the story of a young woman who sees her sister\u2019s sudden and inexplicable impending wedding as an opportunity to finally become an action movie stuntwoman \u2014 the kind capable of saving a loved one from a marriage they don\u2019t really want.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<hr>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<p>Hey so, Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out?<\/p>\n<p>There might not actually be any extraterrestrials in director Jake Van Wagoner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/638a152777dd3d254d80511e\"><em>Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out<\/em><\/a>. But a new trailer that\u2019s dropped ahead of its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/19\/23560909\/sundance-film-festival-2023-news-trailers-reviews\">Sundance debut<\/a> makes the movie\u2019s story about\u00a0a space-obsessed boy convinced that his parents have been taken off-planet, and a neighbor who\u2019s willing to hear him out seem like a heartwarming, Spielbergian sort of affair. <\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<hr>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<p>Netflix is calling dibs on Daina Reid\u2019s Run Rabbit Run.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of its <a href=\"https:\/\/festival.sundance.org\/program\/film\/638a17a0d406b29248f2cb6e\">midnight premiere at this year\u2019s Sundance<\/a>, the rights to XYZ Films\u2019 <em>Run Rabbit Run <\/em>from director Daina Reid (<em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>, <em>Space Force<\/em>) have <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/01\/sundance-netflix-succession-sarah-snook-run-rabbit-run-1235224598\/\">reportedly<\/a> been acquired by Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian psychological horror tells the story of a woman and her daughter struggling to hold onto one another after a mysterious and ominous rabbit turns up one set, and a series of strange happenings begin to tear the family apart.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<hr>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Let the Sundance acquisitions begin.<\/p>\n<p>The Sundance Film Festival isn\u2019t just a great place to catch the latest indie films, it\u2019s also where companies \u2014 include the big streaming services \u2014 go shopping for new content.
