Lynn.)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Lava and smoke shine brightly in a fresh satellite image of an erupting Hawaiian volcano.<\/p>\n<p>Kilauea, based on Hawaii&#8217;s Big Island nearby the volcano Mauna Loa, has been erupting again since Jan. 5 and its fresh activity glows in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19665-landsat.html\">Landsat<\/a> 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\">satellite<\/a> image taken on Jan. 11.<\/p>\n<p>Activity extending from September 2021 to December 2022 already had created a lake of lava surrounding Kilauea, according to NASA&#8217;s Earth Observatory. &#8220;Kilauea has erupted almost continuously from 1983 until 2018, when a\u00a0months-long eruption\u00a0created slow-moving lava flows that destroyed around 700 homes,&#8221; NASA&#8217;s Earth Observatory <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/150836\/kilauea-glows\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/150836\/kilauea-glows\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in a statement<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> Tuesday (Jan. 17).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the 2018 eruption, Kilauea has been erupting sporadically,&#8221; the observatory added. &#8220;These recent eruptions have been contained within the Halema&#8217;uma&#8217;u crater as lakes of lava.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-volcanoes\">Space volcanoes: Origins, variants and eruptions<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It appears that Kilauea and Mauna Loa have volcanic activity that influences the other caldera, even though the volcanoes don&#8217;t share a connection, but that relationship is not firmly established yet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Mauna Loa is frequently active, Kilauea tends to be less active, and vice versa,&#8221; Jim Kauahikaua, a volcanologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/28\/us\/mauna-loa-volcano-eruption-hawaii.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/28\/us\/mauna-loa-volcano-eruption-hawaii.html\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> in November 2022.<\/p>\n<figure data-bordeaux-image-check>\n<div>\n<p><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" alt=\"Hawaii's Big Island volcanoes include Mauna Kea (top center) Mauna Loa (center) and Kilauea, whose Pu'u 'O'o cone is outlined in red.
