Otterkit is a free and open source compiler for the COBOL Programming Language<\/a> on the .NET platform.<\/p>\n

Warning: The project is currently in pre-release, so not all of the standard has been implemented.<\/p>\n

About<\/h2>\n

COBOL was created in 1959 by the CODASYL Committee<\/a> (With Rear Admiral Grace Hopper as a technical consultant to the committee), its design follows Grace Hopper’s belief that programs should be written in a language that is close to English. It prioritizes readability, reliability, and long-term maintenance. The language has been implemented throughout the decades on many platforms with many dialects, and the Otterkit COBOL compiler is a free and open source implementation of the ISO COBOL 2022 Standard on the .NET platform.<\/p>\n

Installation<\/h2>\n

Quick Install<\/h3>\n

Otterkit is available to install on the Nuget package manager<\/a> (.NET 7<\/a> is required). To install, type into the command line:<\/p>\n

Build from Source<\/h3>\n
First, clone the git repo from https:\/\/github.com\/otterkit\/otterkit.git<\/a> to get the source code. To access the libotterkit submodule inside, use the --recurse-submodules --remote-submodules<\/code> flag on the clone command. To run, navigate into the src<\/code> folder (for the compiler, not libotterkit) and then type dotnet run<\/code> into the command line.<\/p>\n
