this.src.indexOf('missing-image.svg') !== -1){return true;};this.parentNode.replaceChild(window.missingImage(),this)\"   data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/Hcth7DEFmoAUHHob6qUVw5.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/Hcth7DEFmoAUHHob6qUVw5.jpg\"><\/picture>\n<\/div>\n<p><meta itemprop=\"url\" content=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/Hcth7DEFmoAUHHob6qUVw5.jpg\"><br \/>\n<meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"600\"><br \/>\n<meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"338\"><figcaption itemprop=\"caption description\">\n<span itemprop=\"copyrightHolder\">(Image credit: Future)<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4080\">Nvidia\u2019s RTX 4080<\/a> is purportedly getting a new spin on the GPU which could reduce the cost \u2013 but any price reduction will likely be very minor, sadly, if it happens at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/news\/nvidia-rtx-4080-new-silicon\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/news\/nvidia-rtx-4080-new-silicon\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom\u2019s Hardware<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> flagged up this rumor \u2013 and treat it with caution, as with anything from the ever-spinning mill \u2013 that originated from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hkepcmedia\/status\/1612338612380766208?s=20&#038;t=EgO9-dvO5BjQ2PescEpKqg\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hkepcmedia\/status\/1612338612380766208?s=20&#038;t=EgO9-dvO5BjQ2PescEpKqg\" rel=\"noopener\">HKEPC<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span> (a tech site in Hong Kong), claiming that while the current RTX 4080 graphics card is built on the AD103-300 chip, Nvidia is going to use a slightly different GPU in the future, namely AD103-301.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s now more evidence this is actually happening, Tom\u2019s points out: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing-components\/graphics-cards\/best-graphics-cards-1291458\">graphics card<\/a> maker Galax has the GPU as \u2018AD103-300\/301\u2019 under its RTX 4080 product details lists.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, <a href=\"https:\/\/videocardz.com\/newz\/nvidia-is-now-shipping-geforce-rtx-4080-with-ad103-301-gpu\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/videocardz.com\/newz\/nvidia-is-now-shipping-geforce-rtx-4080-with-ad103-301-gpu\" rel=\"noopener\">VideoCardz<\/a><span> (opens in new tab)<\/span>, which also picked up on this, informs us that another card maker Gainward has also listed the updated GPU variant AD103-301 in its product specs.<\/p>\n<p>With two separate third-party graphics card makers mentioning this new spin on the GPU in their specs, it seems pretty likely this is actually happening \u2013 but of course it remains to be confirmed by Nvidia.<\/p>\n<p>HKEPC makes a further claim that the inbound RTX 4070 (the vanilla version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/versus\/rtx-4070-ti-vs-rtx-4080\">RTX 4070 Ti<\/a>, which has just been unveiled) might also take the approach of having two different chips, which in this case would theoretically be AD104-250 and AD104-251. The difference is the former supposedly uses a comparator circuit, but the latter doesn\u2019t, and would use a different circuit board, potentially lowering the cost of making the card.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true of the RTX 4080 and new AD103-301, with it potentially lowering the cost of building it (the BOM or bill of materials as it\u2019s known in the industry). The key question is, if all this pans out for both or either GPUs, how much cheaper might the second variants actually be?<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 id=\"analysis-will-this-mean-cheaper-graphics-cards-x2013-or-is-that-a-false-hope\">Analysis: Will this mean cheaper graphics cards \u2013 or is that a false hope?<\/h2>\n<p>HKEPC reckons that the cost gap between the supposed different versions of the RTX 4070 could be as little as $1 in terms of the bill of materials, which is clearly a tiny amount, and likely wouldn\u2019t make a jot of difference to the price that the consumer pays. A source that VideoCardz tapped also claims that any cost difference wouldn\u2019t be significant.<\/p>\n<p>We aren\u2019t given any figure for the potential difference in the cost of making the RTX 4080 versions, but the new AD103-301 might lower the bill to a greater extent, and perhaps mean the graphics card does get cheaper for the consumer. However, it might be a similarly very minor reduction in the BOM, which would doubtless do little to affect the price of the second spin on the RTX 4080.<\/p>\n<p>Time will tell, but given Nvidia\u2019s stance on pricing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/nvidia-lovelace-rtx-40-series-everything-we-know-so-far\">Lovelace GPUs<\/a> overall, it\u2019s hard to be at all optimistic.<\/p>\n<p>Another question is given the change to the RTX 4080 chip, would this affect performance? The rumor mill is pretty clear in its assertion that it wouldn\u2019t, and the AD103-301 chip will not be any more performant than the existing AD103-300. That makes sense, as Nvidia would presumably be wary of dropping a dose of buyer\u2019s remorse on those who\u2019ve already forked out for an RTX 4080, and splashed a large wedge of cash to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The overall upshot of this is likely to be graphics cards with the same performance level \u2013 or so similar as to be negligible \u2013 and slight savings for the board makers, that likely won\u2019t be passed on to consumers.
