Letterkenny\u2019s Roald and Stewart on skid love, gaming, and season 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"dt-post-content\" itemid=\"post-content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>In the current television landscape, it\u2019s becoming increasingly rare for a show to get a second season, let alone the 11, critically acclaimed seasons that <em>Letterkenny<\/em> has delivered to its fans.<\/p>\n<p>The award-winning Canadian sitcom about the residents of a fictional town in rural Ontario chronicles the interactions between the town\u2019s various cliques \u2014 informally known as hicks, skids, hockey players, natives, and degens \u2014 amid a steady stream of brisk dialogue, ham-fisted brawls, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/letterkenny-season-9-interview-reilly-squirrely-dan\/\">Canadian colloquialisms,<\/a> and even the occasional dance break.<\/p>\n<p>While series creator Jared Keeso\u2019s character, Wayne, ostensibly leads the show\u2019s ensemble cast, two of the breakout stars of\u00a0<em>Letterkenny<\/em> are a pair of drug-dealing goths whose adventures in crime have taken them to the big city and back over the course of the show\u2019s run. \u201cSkids\u201d ringleaders Stewart and Roald, played by Tyler Johnston and Evan Stern, respectively, have become fan-favorite characters (and popular fan-fiction subjects) as their relationship has morphed with each passing season.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/letterkenny-season-11-10-prostate-episode-strong-female-characters\/\">season 11 of <em>Letterkenny<\/em><\/a>\u00a0now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/movies\/new-on-hulu\/\">available to stream on Hulu<\/a>, Digital Trends spoke to Johnston and Stern about the duo\u2019s evolving partnership, getting recognized by fans, streaming on Twitch, and the <em>Letterkenny Live<\/em> experience.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/letterkenny-stewart-roald-season-11.jpg?fit=720%2C480&#038;p=1\" onerror=\"dti_load_error(this)\" alt=\"Tyler Johnston sits in a chair with Evan Stern on the floor nearby in a scene from Letterkenny season 11.\" previous-src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/letterkenny-stewart-roald-season-11.jpg?fit=720%2C480&#038;p=1\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Digital Trends: Stewart and Roald\u2019s relationship has evolved quite a bit since the early seasons. How would you describe your dynamic these days?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Evan Stern:<\/strong> Best friends, for sure. And maybe \u2026 lovers?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tyler Johnston:<\/strong> Are we still talking about Roald and Stewart?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> I would say we went from a more controller-and-subservient dynamic to something a little bit more, well \u2026 Tyler has actually noticed it in the last couple of seasons. He\u2019s been like, \u201cI don\u2019t like how much independence Roald has now!\u201d There\u2019s definitely been a bit of an arc where Roald gets a little bit more, well \u2026 let\u2019s call it power?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Yeah, it\u2019s changed. And I think in Stewart\u2019s case, he\u2019s realized that close \u2026 friends \u2026 like Roald don\u2019t come by every day.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Stern:<\/strong> Almost never, for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> I think Stewart has come to appreciate his \u2026 friend \u2026 Roald more and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Stern:<\/strong> You keep saying \u201cfriend,\u201d but I think you\u2019re looking for another word here.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/letterkenny-stewart-roald.jpg?fit=720%2C478&#038;p=1\" onerror=\"dti_load_error(this)\" alt=\"Tyler Johnston and Evan Stern stand behind a DJ booth in a scene from Letterkenny.\" previous-src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/letterkenny-stewart-roald.jpg?fit=720%2C478&#038;p=1\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>I appreciate the very clear quotation marks around \u201cfriend\u201d every time you two say it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> Yeah, it\u2019s always like, \u201cwe\u2019re \u2026 friends?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of my favorite moments in the series are when everyone gets together around some common cause. What are those moments like on your side?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> They don\u2019t want us in the room anymore. They put up tape!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> It\u2019s amazing to work with all the people in the cast. When you get to walk in and see 10 of your best friends in a room, and they\u2019re like, \u201cAll right, everybody, let\u2019s start work,\u201d you\u2019re like, \u201cOK, sure!\u201d It just feels nice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> It\u2019s really, really fun. It\u2019s kind of like a Royal Rumble sometimes. You put all the characters into a room and let them go at it. We\u2019re all professionals, but some of us try to make each other laugh. What was the point when you realized this was something special \u2014 that you were part of a show people were going to be quoting at you everywhere you went?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> I was walking home one night after some drinks and these two dudes from Ireland picked me up and started carrying me like I was in a chair, and they were like, \u201cWe love <em>Letterkenny<\/em>!\u201d I was like, \u201cThis is wild.\u201d I didn\u2019t know who these dudes were, but it was like, \u201cOh, wow, we touched Ireland.\u201d That was a moment for me, for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That could have gone a different way. I\u2019m glad it worked out!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> Right?!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Like, \u201cI was drinking and these guys grabbed me and carried me away \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> They picked me up so easily! I mean, I know I\u2019m small, but, wow!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> There were a couple of moments in this <em>Letterkenny<\/em> journey for me. One was during the first couple of seasons, when Dylan [Playfair] and Andrew [Herr] were on Canadian TV commercials all the time between hockey and football games. You could not get away from seeing Andrew and Dylan, [who play] Reilly and Jonesy, everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Another moment was when I went to the airport here in Vancouver and there was a big billboard at the airport running a <em>Letterkenny<\/em> commercial. That was really cool, and then, of course, when the Hulu sale happened, it took the whole thing to the next level.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Stern:<\/strong> We went international, baby!<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/letterkenny-stewart-roald-tyler-johnston-evan-stern.jpg?fit=720%2C478&#038;p=1\" onerror=\"dti_load_error(this)\" alt=\"Tyler Johnston and Evan Stern scowl at the camera in a scene from Letterkenny.\" previous-src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/letterkenny-stewart-roald-tyler-johnston-evan-stern.jpg?fit=720%2C478&#038;p=1\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Similar to Evan, I was actually in Edinburgh [Scotland] with Andrew, and a bartender at this bar we were at didn\u2019t recognize me, but recognized Andrew. He goes, \u201cAre you the guy from <em>Letterkenny<\/em>?\u201d Andrew was like, \u201cYou know about the show?\u201d He said, \u201cYeah, my roommates here introduced me to the show and we all love it.\u201d Andrew and I still had to pay for the drinks, but \u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> \u2026 so it was a terrible experience overall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Yeah, totally. But no, really, it was a pretty cool experience in the end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I guess without the wig and such, you probably don\u2019t get recognized as often, Tyler?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Not as much as some of our some of the other actors, no.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Stern:<\/strong> Yeah, you fly under the radar. What are some scenarios you\u2019d like to see the skids explore?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> I would love to see Roald and Stewart do something on their own in the city at some point and go into that city plot just a little more, just to see why the city was so dangerous and why the city is so bad for them. I feel like there\u2019s a lot of opportunity to explore that. We got a bit of it a couple of seasons back, with the drug dealer and how dangerous it can get with [party drug] GHB and all that stuff, but I think we can get a little bit more \u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> He wants more danger!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> I want more danger. I want a <em>little<\/em> more danger!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Me, I\u2019m thinking they should become accountants and try to settle down and crunch numbers. You\u2019ll start to think like, \u201cOh my God, the skids have really settled in and they\u2019re relaxed. I saw you were gaming during the\u00a0<em>Letterkenny Live<\/em> tour and streaming. What\u2019s the Twitch experience like for you and what are you playing these days?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the thing: Tyler really is my biggest fan. Every time I do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/gaming\/what-is-twitch\/\">Twitch<\/a> stream, I see the little \u201ctylerjbjohnston\u201d tag pop into the chat. It\u2019s always like, \u201cHey, buddy! How\u2019s it going, buddy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> I\u2019m like, \u201cI love you! I support you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> And that\u2019s when I silence my phone. \u2026 But I love Twitch. I love the opportunity to connect with fans on a one-on-one basis, because they get in there and we have conversations. We get to play games together! We play a lot of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/gaming\/what-is-valorant\/\">Valorant<\/a><\/em> right now. It\u2019s a first-person shooter, and it\u2019s beautiful. And yeah, Tyler is so supportive of it and it just warms my heart to see my co-worker coming in to say hello occasionally \u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong> Johnston:<\/strong> Co-worker? Or \u2026 friend?<\/p>\n<p><strong> Stern:<\/strong> Exactly. I\u2019ve been trying to convince him to join Twitch and to play games with me. And I think I think he\u2019s close. I think we almost got him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> What games are you playing, Rick?<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m still catching up with a lot of games. I just got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/gaming\/sony-playstation-5-review\/\">PlayStation 5<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> Oh, congratulations!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> Lucky! What was it like for you two doing a live version of the series?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> Which <em>Letterkenny Live<\/em> show did you go to?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The one in Albany, New York. You weren\u2019t actually at that one, Evan. I think you were under the weather.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Johnston:<\/strong> It was probably a banger, that one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong>\u00a0I heard that one sucked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It was great, but you were missed, Evan. So how was the live tour?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Johnston:<\/strong> I\u2019d give it a 25 out of 10, Rick. There\u2019s so much energy when you step onstage. I don\u2019t do stand-up comedy, but I imagine being able to step on a stage and knowing people are going to laugh at anything you say, no matter what you say, is a pretty safe feeling. And getting to share in the energy of this amazing show with our fans in person like that was pretty special.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stern:<\/strong> Yeah, it was awesome. One thing we got to share with each other, too, was traveling around on a bus. I thought for sure I would get so sick of these people. I had prepared to be like, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not going to talk to Tyler for a year after this.\u201d But we were closer than ever after the tour.
