Yet, their air compression systems require refrigerants to work. These refrigerants, also known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), are amongst the most potent greenhouse gasses.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2017 and having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informateurjudiciaire.fr\/actualites\/entretien-cedric-francois-fondateur-dequium-le-son-est-une-nouvelle-energie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">raised <\/a><span>\u20ac5 million,<\/span>\u00a0French deeptech startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equium.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Equium<\/a> is seeking to provide a more ecological alternative. With this aim, it has developed a novel, acoustic heat pump core that harnesses the energy of sound.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called Acoustic Heat Pump (AHP) can cover a household\u2019s heating needs without the use of refrigerants. Instead, its operation is based on the phenomenon of thermoacoustics \u2014 the convergence of thermics, acoustics, and fluid mechanics.<\/p>\n<p>The core works with a high-fidelity (Hi-Fi) speaker powered by electricity, which generates an acoustic wave in tubes filled with helium \u2014 a neutral and non-toxic gas that accelerates the propagation of sound. The acoustic wave causes the gas to compress or expand, producing heat or cold, respectively. Credit: Equium<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Equium, the heat pump isn\u2019t just greenhouse gas-free, but also made from 100% recyclable materials, boasting overall a very low carbon footprint. At the same time, the machine\u2019s ecological mode of operation is claimed to provide the same efficiency of a conventional heat pump, while increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/topic\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy<\/a> savings and overall cost.<\/p>\n<p>A big part of that is the pump\u2019s modulation, which allows users to increase or decrease the speaker\u2019s volume to achieve the desired power output. Apart from that, the system is easy to install, doesn\u2019t require maintenance and has a lifespan of around 30 years \u2014 about <a href=\"https:\/\/postonbrothers.com\/how-long-should-a-heat-pump-last\/#:~:text=How%20Long%20Does%20a%20Heat,about%2010%20to%2015%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">twice as long as a conventional heat pump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.informateurjudiciaire.fr\/actualites\/entretien-cedric-francois-fondateur-dequium-le-son-est-une-nouvelle-energie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">As per the startup\u2019s founder, C\u00e9dric Fran\u00e7ois<\/a>, for an equivalent cost and size, the AHP\u2019s advantage translates to a 50% lower CO2 impact and a 20% lower energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Equium\u2019s aim is to sell its acoustic cores to heat pump manufacturers, seeking to develop a French acoustic HP industry. The first integration will be processed by the startup\u2019s strategic partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkteos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Arkteos<\/a>, a regional manufacturer. The company is currently conducting field tests and expects to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.informateurjudiciaire.fr\/actualites\/entretien-cedric-francois-fondateur-dequium-le-son-est-une-nouvelle-energie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">market its product in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To date, the young French startup has only one competitor in this brand new market: Netherlands-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueheartenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BlueHeart Energy<\/a>.
