I met Disney\u2019s new voice assistant at CES this week, and it\u2019s pretty cute. Called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/devices\/amazon-and-disney-team-up-to-launch-an-entirely-new-alexa-enabled-experience-for-fans-called-hey-disney\">Disney\u2019s Magical Companion<\/a>,\u201d the disembodied voice is born from fairy dust and lives inside Amazon\u2019s Echo smart speakers and displays. Its purpose is to call up various characters \u2014 including Disney, Pixar, and Star Wars\u00a0faves \u2014 to help you out with common voice assistant chores (timers, alarms, weather), as well as entertain with stories, games, and other sprinkles of Disney magic.<\/p>\n<p>You conjure the assistant with the phrase \u201cHey Disney!\u201d \u2014 here\u2019s a quick demo I did at CES this week:<\/p>\n<p>One neat thing about the integration is you never know which character will answer your query \u2014 it could be Dory from <em>Finding Nemo<\/em> or Olaf from <em>Frozen<\/em> one moment, then Mater from <em>Cars<\/em> or Animal from <em>The Muppets<\/em> the next.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/9\/28\/22692064\/amazon-hey-disney-echo-custom-voice-assistant-resort-locations\">First announced in 2021, \u201cHey Disney<\/a>!\u201d was built using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/devices\/amazon-and-disney-team-up-to-launch-an-entirely-new-alexa-enabled-experience-for-fans-called-hey-disney\">Alexa Custom Assistant voice AI foundation<\/a>, which allows third parties to create custom voice assistants that can coexist with Amazon\u2019s Alexa assistant in Echo speakers. It\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22588961\/alexa-voice-echo-male-female-celebrity-how-to-change\">similar to the celebrity voices<\/a> you can download from the likes of Samuel Jackson, but with more customized games and integrations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Currently, \u201cHey Disney!\u201d is in limited hotel rooms at Disney\u2019s Polynesian Village Resort as part of a phased rollout across Disney\u2019s hotels, where it also helps as a sort of virtual concierge. But the Magical Companion is also coming to your home in 2023, through the Alexa Skills store.
