{"id":595449,"date":"2023-01-08T09:51:58","date_gmt":"2023-01-08T15:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sellorbuyhomefast.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/08\/ransomware-incident-exposes-medical-data-in-pennsylvania\/"},"modified":"2023-01-08T09:51:58","modified_gmt":"2023-01-08T15:51:58","slug":"ransomware-incident-exposes-medical-data-in-pennsylvania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/08\/ransomware-incident-exposes-medical-data-in-pennsylvania\/","title":{"rendered":"Ransomware incident exposes medical data in Pennsylvania"},"content":{"rendered":"<div property=\"content:encoded\">\n<p>Maternal &#038; Family Health Services, a nonprofit organization that oversees and supports a network of health and nutrition centers in 17 northeastern Pennsylvania counties, announced Tuesday that it was hit with &#8220;sophisticated&#8221; ransomware on April 4, 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHY IT MATTERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The unauthorized access to the organization&#8217;s systems occurred between August 21, 2021 and April 4, 2022, according to the statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MFHS, which serves more than 90,000 women, men and children annually, offers pregnancy care, reproductive health services and more and administers a WIC nutrition program.<\/p>\n<p>The organization began sending letters this week to potentially impacted patients to inform them that their personal information may have been compromised.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The personal and financial data could include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver&#8217;s license numbers, financial account\/payment card information, usernames and passwords, medical information and\/or health insurance information.<\/p>\n<p>MFHS is offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to those whose Social Security number and\/or financial account\/payment card information may have been involved in the incident.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE LARGER TREND<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ransomware hits providers and agencies, both small and large, and cybercriminals will attack profit and non-profit organizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The healthcare industry&#8217;s size makes\u00a0<a data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/health-system-cisos-offer-tips-building-cybersecurity-muscle-memory\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/health-system-cisos-offer-tips-building-cybersecurity-muscle-memory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">all players a target for cyberattacks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s a\u00a0<a data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/cms-subcontractor-hit-ransomware\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/cms-subcontractor-hit-ransomware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">business associate of CMS<\/a>\u00a0or a nationwide provider like\u00a0<a data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/commonspirit-faces-more-ransomware-fallout\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/commonspirit-faces-more-ransomware-fallout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CommonSpirit Health<\/a>, organizations are left scrambling to maintain care and services while they get systems back online and implement back-ups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while larger provider systems may be more complex than small medical groups, &#8220;they still have the same kind of risk, as we have [all] leveraged technology to deliver care,&#8221; Erik Decker, CISO for Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, told\u00a0<em>Healthcare IT News\u00a0<\/em>in September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ON THE RECORD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand the inconvenience or concern this incident may cause and are committed to strengthening our systems&#8217; security to prevent this kind of incident from happening again,&#8221; said Maria Montoro Edwards, president &#038; CEO of Maternal &#038; Family Health Services, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><em>Andrea Fox is senior editor of Healthcare IT News.<br \/>\nEmail:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/mailto:af**@***ss.org\" data-original-string=\"Tq\/\/+vmlRKypw4CHhw8w0Q==7f4GZFUfwMjR1qHBGc0Z3kBaQ==\" title=\"This contact has been encoded by Anti-Spam by CleanTalk.
