Affected users face the risk of hostile takeovers of accounts (both on Twitter and other locations tied to the data) plus the possibility of having their identity revealed if they\u2019d been using the site anonymously.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to wait for the other shoe to drop, however. Security website  is already allowing people to check if they were affected\u2014meaning you can be proactive about understanding (and addressing) your level of risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Simply hop over to the site, then enter your email address or phone number to see all the major data breaches you\u2019ve been caught in. (Caveat: HIBP can\u2019t warn you about a breach no one yet knows about.) You\u2019ll get alerts whenever the database is updated and your email address is part of a new data breach. Now\u2019s also the time to get busy shoring up your security, like using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/393960\/how-to-pick-the-perfect-password.html\">strong, unique passwords<\/a> for every website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/403535\/two-factor-authentication-faq-sms-authenticator-security-key-icloud.html\">two-factor authentication<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/708303\/what-is-masked-email-this-new-spin-on-an-old-practice-supercharges-your-security.html\">unique email masks<\/a> or usernames.<\/p>\n<p>Improving your Twitter security in particular might be a wise idea, given the company\u2019s upheaval since its change in ownership. Since Musk\u2019s takeover, much of the company was gutted, leaving a severely reduced workforce to grapple with site management\u2014and no communications team to alert users to problems.
