Credit: Dmitri Djouce \/ CC BY 2.0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Planning permission has been granted for a \u00a3120m redevelopment and retrofit of a Grade-II listed art deco department-store building in west London.<\/p>\n<p>Kensington and Chelsea council approved the plans for the Barkers of Kensington building, drawn up by Emrys Architects on behalf of Resla Properties.<\/p>\n<p>Emrys said the designs will enlarge the eight-storey building\u2019s entrance space on Derry Street, which is currently \u201cdark, enclosed and dated\u201d, while retaining its \u201cspacious and light-filled\u201d central atrium.<\/p>\n<p>The plans will add a new \u201cgrand staircase\u201d and escalators with art deco-inspired finishes, as well as new suspended walkways and a bridge to improve circulation in the upper levels.<\/p>\n<p>A caf\u00e9 and casual seating as well as new lifts, staircases and balconies are intended to \u201cbring the impressive atrium to life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The basement of the 53,000 square metre venue will be remodelled as a flexible space for uses such as networking, talks and hospitality, while its \u201ciconic\u201d roof lanterns will be repurposed as private dining spaces.<\/p>\n<p>The building\u2019s original construction was completed in the 1950s after being interrupted by the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>Following a refurbishment in the 1980s, it was used mainly as offices, with newspapers including the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> and the <em>London Evening Standard<\/em> on the upper floors and shops on the lower floors.<\/p>\n<p>But Emrys said that the venue currently provides \u201cneither quality commercial accommodation nor effective retail floor space\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It said its plans will \u201crevive the building as a prime commercial location while respecting its strong character and heritage\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Emrys director Glyn Emrys said it was a \u201chuge privilege and responsibility\u201d to repurpose the building for 21st-century use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have sought to retain and enhance the existing building as much as possible, working with it to create flexible new spaces with a clear focus on character, sustainability and wellbeing,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Related articles<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionnews.co.uk\/buildings\/green-light-for-120m-barkers-of-kensington-overhaul-06-01-2023\/\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><br \/>\n Jonathan Knott<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The current building.
